Assam's class 10 exam result: Less than 50% students cleared the exam

Assam witnessed less than 50% students passing the exams when results of class 10 exams were announced by the state-run Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) on Wednesday. This was the lowest passing percentage in the past 13 years of the state. Total number of students who appeared for the exams were 3,72,640 out of which only 1,78,666 students were declared passed which accounts to mere 47.94 percent of the total number of students who appeared for the exams. As compared to last year the drop in the passing percentage this year is 14.84 percent. According to the result sheet released by the SEBA, this year state records the lowest passing percentage since 2004.In 2004 the pass percentage was 49.80 percent whereas the highest pass percentage was in 2013 i.e. 70.71 percent.This year's most of the toppers were from the lesser known private schools who secured the first 10 positions and the high profile schools located in the Assam's capital Guwahati failed to secure even one place in the first ten positions.Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated the students (passed) and rank holder while Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced strict action against the state's poor result in exams. "The success in this examination is the result of the students' hard work and perseverance and through their dedication and sincerity the students must aspire to reach greater heights in the future to be able to contribute meaningfully to the society," Assam Chief Minister said in a statement.

DU website goes fully functional

The wait of the students who were seeking admission into Delhi University ended on Wednesday when the website of DU goes fully functional which allowed students to complete the registration process on the website.CBSE class XII results were declared by the board on May 28, but students were unable to complete the application process as there were some nonfunctional tabs present on the website of DU. "The admission web portal for the undergraduate (merit based) programs...is working efficiently and all the tabs are active and within two hours of opening all the tabs, more than 3,500 applicants completed their registration...," the university said in a statement. Merit based registration process for the undergraduate programs began on May 22 but, due to some technical glitches students were only able to enter their 'personal details' as the tab for the 'academic details' was non-functional.After the website went fully functional, so far, 160,131 candidates have registered on the website out of which 73,824 are male and 56,994 are female.

A juvenile and a DU student held for lynching e-rickshaw driver

A DU student and his juvenile accomplice have been arrested by Delhi police for lynching an e-rickshaw driver as the driver objected and stopped them from urinating at the GTB Metro Station in north Delhi.The lynching happened on Saturday Night and attracted the attention of the nation along with the PM Narendra Modi. Everyone was condemning the death and urged police to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.Police said "the accused student Shekhar Kapasia, 19, and his juvenile friend were captured in a CCTV footage which helped to identify them". Both of them were arrested by the police from their hideouts in Muzaffarnagar on Tuesday. "We have identified five other youths. We are interrogating Kapasia and the juvenile to ascertain the hideouts of their associates involved in killing e-rickshaw driver Ravinder Kumar on Saturday. Seven police teams and a team of Crime Branch are conducting a manhunt to trace their hideouts in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana," Deputy Commissioner of Police Milind Mahadeo Dumbere told IANS. "Kapasia and his juvenile accomplice told investigators that the verbal altercation with Kumar turned abusive and they took it personally. They planned to take revenge and later returned with their friends. One of them tied up stones in a cotton towel and attacked Kumar multiple times," Dumbere said.On the death of the driver, Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu tweeted: "Sad that an e rickshaw driver was beaten to death for stopping 2 people from urinating in public in Delhi. He was promoting SwachhBharat".Modi government and Delhi government announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively to the family of the deceased.

15 year old girl passed class 12 board exams with flying colors as she battles against her cancer

The results of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) have been declared by the board and students can visit the official website of the board at mahresult.nic.in to check their results.It is very commonly said that if you have the spirit of doing something than people and obstacles cannot stand in your way. Such an example was set by 15 year old girl Sneha Ari, who cleared the class 12 board examinations with flying colors despite her battle with her terminal illness cancer.The 15 year old girl is suffering from cancer and Is currently in critical condition.Despite suffering from such illness she took the science stream and was able to score 60 percent when the results were declared.Statement from the little girl "I checked my results from the hospital bed. Although it's not my best score, I am happy with it," said Ari, who lives in a slum in Worli, according to the reports from Hindustan Times. More about her educationAri, also appeared for the 5th Joint Entrance Examination (Main) 2017 which was conducted across the nation on April 2.About her future plans When asked about her future plans she told that she wants to pursue engineering.Her father said that they will look for the colleges which are closer to the home. According to the reports, the girl wrote both class 10 and 12 exams on her own without the help from the scribe. "My shoulders and legs hurt, but I did not want a writer," said Sneha.

Indian Online education industry to have a turnover of $1.96 billion by 2021

With the increased penetration of internet and smartphones, the online education industry is expected to hit the mark of $1.96 billion by 2021 according a joint report published by Google and KPMG.According to the report, there has been a two-fold increase in online searches for education and from mobile platform the growth in the same search has increased by three fold. "It is also interesting to note that high growth in education search queries is now coming in from tier 2 and tier 3 cities such as Patna, Guwahati, Aligarh and Kota, which points to the opportunities that growing penetration of smartphones and improving quality of Internet have opened up," said Nitin Bawankule, Industry Director, Google India, in a statement. In last one year there has been four-fold growth in content consumption related to education alone on YouTube."There are several evolving trends in the Indian online education segment. These include emergence of hybrid learning channels, continuous need for working professionals to learn new skills as well as emergence of technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence that is enabling online education vendors to design customized content," noted Sreedhar Prasad, Partner, KPMG India.

UGC to make Father's name on the degree certificate optional

Prakash Javadekar told a news agency in an interview that UGC will soon come up with a proposal which will make the printing on Father's name on the degree document optional. "We are okay with the idea. Whether the student wants to mention mother's name or father's name should be his or her choice," Mr Javadekar said in the interview. "We like the concept and have no objection to it. The UGC will work on it soon," he added. This suggestion was made by the Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi and HRD ministry in principal have agreed to the decision.Such concerns were raised by single mothers following which, Menaka Gandhi wrote to Mr. Javadekar and asked him to change the rule which requires Father's name to be mandatory on the degree certificates of the students. "I have been approached by several women who are separated from their husbands and who face problems getting degree certificates issued for their children without their father's name," Ms Gandhi said in the letter.In the letter Gandhi mentioned that breaking of marriages is one reality and the rules must reflect it. "Keeping in view the sensitivity of the single/separated mother, we need to make a provision for this purpose by changing rules/guidelines," she said in the letter.Last year on the request by MS Gandhi, Ministry of External Affairs revised the passport application rules and announced that the name of only one parent is required to apply for the passport.

DU to help disadvantaged students to prepare for the PG entrance test

To help the disadvantageous students in preparing for the Post Graduate (PG) entrance test, the Delhi University (DU) has announced a summer school for the students who are coming from the disadvantageous section of the society.Now, this is the second year in a row when university is organizing such classes for the students who come from economically weaker section of the society (EWS), SC, ST, OBC and persons with disability (PwD). "This year, the university plans to hold free classes for PG entrance examinations in five disciplines: English, Law, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology. The duration of the classes will be about two weeks," the varsity said in a statement. The application for the 'DU Pre-Entrance Summer School 2017' can be downloaded from the DU's official site and submitted at the institute of life log learning (ILLL) at North Campus between May 31 and June 5 from 2 pm to 5 pm. The last day for submitting the form is June 6 and on this day the forms will be accepted between 10 am and 2 pm. The university has made it clear that it won't be able to provide the facility to all the students and seats will be allocated to the students on first come first serve basis. From the selected students the university will charge a nominal fee of Rs 100.Tentative dates for the commencement of classes are June 7 and June 9 and the online registration for the PG admissions will start from May 31.
