To ease the burden on the students NCERT reduced its syllabus by half

To ease the burden on the students, NCERT reduced its syllabus by half

On Wednesday, Union minister Prakash Javadekar announced that the government has decided to reduce the NCERT syllabus by half as students were unable to find the time for any other activities. "There is a huge load of books and information, and students have no time. There is no time for physical education, value education and life skills. So, we decided to halve the portion (syllabus). There is no need to teach them everything. Students should learn principles and rest of the knowledge they can gain later," Javadekar said. Mr Javadekar was present at an event 10th foundation day of the Foundation for Restoration of National Values (FRNV), where he said that the ministry had received 37000 suggestions from parents, teachers and educationists to reduce the burden of studies on the students. He further said that the NCERT syllabus was so cramped that the government has decided to reduce it by half. The minister further said that the good values can be given to children only at home and suggested training for the parents in this regard. He also praised the efforts of the FRNV to integrate value based education in the schools and assured that HRD ministry will work together as a partner in this initiative.

NIOS students facing difficulties with their exam results

NIOS students facing difficulties with their exam results

NIOS students, who had appeared for the exams of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are facing lots of difficulties in getting their mark sheets corrected. The results of the NIOS were announced on Saturdays. Some students are alleging that they have been marked absent in their mark sheets for the exams they have written and other students have scored single digit marks in certain subjects, which they claim to be impossibly low. Saket Prasad was marked absent in the Physics exam and has scored only six marks in the Chemistry exam. He said “I took the exam at the Distance Learning Institute in Model Colony and everybody at the examination hall has either been marked absent in physics, or has received low marks in chemistry. I was supposed to send my results tomorrow (Tuesday) to the JEE Advanced website but I have now lost out on that… I tried to contact officials at the JEE through their helpline, they said they could not make any exceptions in my case. I submitted a letter today (Monday) at the NIOS office but they told me it might take more than a month to respond…”. Nilesh Hiremath, the father of Ninad Hiremath, another student, said that he is a bright student, who scored 85 percent marks in class X. “He is a bright student who scored above 85 percent in Class X, he could not have scored single-digit marks. I went to the exam center and verified that his signature was on the attendance sheet for the physics exam… why was he marked absent? I went to the NIOS regional center and met many parents who had similar complaints. The regional center authorities told us that our complaints have been sent to the higher authorities,” he said. For the students, it is a race against time as they can lose a year or admissions to the college of their choice. Sweta Yadav, who has scored six marks in chemistry, said, “I have been told that even if I apply for a revaluation, the results will mostly be out either in August or September. So, whatever I do, I will lose a year. I have heard that some of the students from Commerce and Arts streams have been marked absent in two subjects.”

GSEB class 10 results | Students unable to write their names but topped the English subject

GSEB class 10 results | Students unable to write their names but topped the English subject

Some students of class 10 who cannot write simple spellings such as ‘friend’, ‘clever’, ‘fondly’, ‘tennis’ etc. including their own names excelled in GSEB English exam. This came to light during a session conducted with more than 200 class X students. All these students were found cheating at various examination centers in Panchmahal district during the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination Board’s (GSHSEB) board exams. This year, there have been 230 cases of mass copying during the GSHSEB exams and 96 cases from the 230 were caught and confirmed during the class X English paper. All the 96 caught cases were from the examination center of Kavali in Shehara taluka of Panchmahal district. The hearing of the rest of the 130 cases was scheduled by the board after declaring the results of the board exams. Evaluators spotted striking similarities not only in the answers but also, in the mistakes before the suspected students were called for the hearing. “Certainly this is a reason for concern for the state education department if such glaring copying cases are detected in language subjects which are otherwise considered to be easier than Maths and Science. This needs to be further investigated,” said a senior GSHSEB official of the examination branch. By taking action against the students, the board has barred them from the exams for two to three years and now plans to follow a similar strict action against the teachers involved in the cheating. “This year strict action will be taken against all those involved, right from teachers who assisted in mass copying to the center supervisors,” said GSHSEB chairman A J Shah.

Punjab class X exams results | Majority of students lag in English and Math

Punjab class X exams results | Majority of students lag in English and Math

Jaspreet Singh, a students of class 10 failed his class 10 exams because English was the toughest subject from him. This is not the story of only Jaspreet but many others who find studying English an ardous task. Jaspreet Singh said that students could not study English during the last few months of the exams due to absence of regular teacher. “We did not have regular English lectures after December, so we could not prepare for the exam,” he said. Jaspreet Singh is a students at the Govt High School at Majaat village. “I feel the situation did not change a bit. Last year, the Mathematics results were very weak. This year it happened with English. These two are the most important subjects and our school is lagging behind in these two. It is a matter of great worry for us,” said Hakam Singh, a member of the committee looking after the school. Hakan Singh blamed the teacher and said that teachers are not putting in enough efforts and children are suffering. Parwinder Singh, who also failed in English examination, said that their regular English teacher went on leave in December after which their social studies teacher started teaching them English in January and the exams were in March. “Our studies suffered as we were not able to finish the syllabus in the last days. We also tried to take private tuition but since no good teacher was available in our village, so we failed in the examination,” Parwinder said. “The results are bad. Since there was no regular English teacher in the last months, we could not do anything. The English teacher went on maternity leave and then we had to make some alternative arrangements. Last year we were weak in Mathematics, this year we improved a lot and out of 31 students, 25 (80.64 per cent) students passed the exam,” said Kashmir Kaur, additional headmistress of the school.

No detention policy and poor attendance are the main cause of poor class X result: Haryana school teachers

No detention policy and poor attendance are the main cause of poor class X result: Haryana school teachers

For some students of class X from the Government Senior Secondary School Rehna, in the Raipurrani block it is second time in a row that they have failed to clear the class X exams. Now, the parents of these children have decided to pull their children out of the school. This year, more than 54 percent of the students have failed the class X exams of the Haryana Board School of Education examination. The worst performers in this race are Government Senior Secondary School Rehna  and Government School Bhood where only 1 and 4 students were able to pass their exams respectively. With no remedial measures and extra-classes the stakes for the future of these children are high. However, the teachers from the school put all the blame on the government’s no detention policy and poor attendance of the these students in the school. “When they come to higher classes, they donʼt even know how to write basic things, what to talk of explaining the curriculum to them. It is all because of the right to education policy wherein these students who donʼt even know anything are promoted till Class VIII,” said a teacher of the Government School Bhood on condition of anonymity. Principal of the Government School Bhood, Pushpa Rani, said that the school has been making all the possible efforts to improve the performance of such children but they don’t attend the classes. “Parents make them do homely work. What do we do?” she said. Tejinder, Principal of the Government Senior Secondary School, Rehna said that we have all the facilities here but most of the times these children are not interested in studies. “Just after a few months, teachers leave after getting the transfers done. I am still trying hard to get in some teachers here. But the fact is that these students have to be pulled out of their homes to attend classes,” she said. However, both the villages have a different tale to tell and they hold the staff’s absentism as a main factor for the students’ failures in the exam. “What to talk of holding any extra classes for the students who failed, these teachers donʼt even come here to attend regular classes. We always find students loitering outside because all the teachers aren’t here. In some cases, they even remain absent for months and later get themselves transferred,” Taj Mohammad, a resident of Rehna village, said. He added, “Moreover, when a student has failed, isn’t it the teachers’ responsibility to make efforts and improve the child’s performance? Teachers say that children don’t attend classes and if children don’t attend the school as per what teachers say, why do they then make an effort to appear a second time after they have flunked? This is just an excuse given by the teachers,” he said.

No home-work may soon become a reality of Indian schools

No home-work may soon become a reality of Indian schools

No home-work policy for classes I and II may soon become a reality as  Madras High Court passed a directive to do away with it. “We will definitely follow the order. I believe children should attend school to learn with fun and should not be put under any pressure. We shall study the order and do whatever is possible to reduce (academic) burden,” Javadekar said in a press release on Saturday. Javadekar expressed hope to pass the bill by amending the  Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which will be tabled in the monsoon session of the Parliament. “The Congress has not allowed us to hold the Parliament session. By March 2019, each state will be able to bring back pass-fail in classes V and VIII. As many as 25 states including Bengal have agreed to the proposal,” he added. Once the pass-fail system is back, students can be detained in two classes for their poor performance and will be given two months before they can re-appear for the exams again. “Only if they fail in the second exam, they will have to repeat the class,” Javadekar said. In the June end, HRD is all set to unveil the new education policy. “It will be a comprehensive policy involving the education of the next generation,” he added.

Parents in Hyderabad argued to postpone the school re-opening

Parents in Hyderabad argued to postpone the school re-opening

The Hyderabad School Parents Association (HSPA) is demanding that re-opening of the schools should be postponed to mid-June. Their demand comes a day after the school education department’s decision to run half-day schools from June 4-8. The association also submitted a letter raising their concerns to Adhar Sinha, Telangana commissioner and director of school education department. The maximum temperature in Telangana is around 40-degree Celsius and parents argued that this can affect the health of the children severely. “We understand that this yearʼs decision to reopen school on June 1 is taken to celebrate the Telangana state formation day. We very much respect the sentiment of the state formation and are much happy to celebrate but not at the expense of the health of lakhs of school going children (sic),” reads the letter. Balala Hakula Sangam (BHS), a child’s right group also demanded that state should withdraw its memo. In the memo, the state stated that schools will run from 7 am to 11 am. “It is impractical to expect a child to wake up at 5 am in order to reach school by 7 am. The department should have taken a rational decision which will not have any effect on the studentsʼ health,” said Achyutha Rao, honorary president of BHS.

CBSE board exams | Re-evaluation process to open from Friday

CBSE board exams | Re-evaluation process to open from Friday

CBSE board exams students have a reason to delight as CBSE has re-introduced the process of re-evaluation for the class X and XII students. Candidates who want that their sheets are re-evaluated can apply for the process from Friday. Re-checking the answer sheets is the first step in the re-evaluation process. In 2017, CBSE had ended the process of re-evaluation but students were not happy with the decision and approached the Delhi High Court. On court’s orders that board will re-evaluate the answer sheets on the first come first serve basis. Within few hours of declaring the results, all the 28 lakh candidates received their certificates on the digilocker. The window to apply for the re-evaluation is open from June 1 to June 5 and candidates who are interested in applying can apply for the process and make the payment online. Announcing the dates, HRD secretary Anil Swarup tweeted, “Rechecking/re-evaluation process and details for Classes X and XII CBSE examinations now available on CBSE web portal.” The process is favorable to the students but not cheap as for rechecking candidates have to shell out INR 500 per subject and the cost of getting a photocopy of an answer book is INR 700 for class XII. For re-evaluation candidates from both classes will have to shell out INR 100 per question. The board said “students who apply for rechecking will their results by June 14, 2018.Thereafter, they can seek a copy of the answer sheet on June 15 and 16,2018. The copies will be sent by June 20, 2018.” In 2014 CBSE had decided to allow the allow the facility of re-evaluation to the students of class XII. Initially, only 7 subjects namely English, Hindi, physics, chemistry, mathematics, political science and economics were covered and later the facility was extended to 11 subjects. However, in 2017 the board withdrew the facility. In Feb 2017, after students approached the Delhi HC, the HC upheld the students’ right to be re-evaluated in all the subjects. The court also struck down the selective re-evaluation policy of the board and termed its decision as eccentric. However; in June 2017, the board gave the undertaking that the board will relax its verification scheme and re-evaluation facility will be provided on first come and first serve basis.
