Move to introduce common engineering test put on hold by the government

The plan to introduce a common engineering test on the lines of NEET from next year has been put on hold by the Human Resource Development Ministry. Earlier, in March, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) had announced that from 2018, the government will conduct a single window entrance exam for government colleges.But, for now HRD ministry has put the idea of introducing the common engineering entrance exam on hold as it first wants to evaluate the success of the NEET exam, introduce last year by the government, before moving ahead with the plan. “It has been decided that there will be no common engineering exam next year. However, the idea has not been completely discarded. The AICTE will submit a report about feasibility of conducting the exam in future,” a senior official said. At present CBSE conducts JEE exams for admissions into the IITs, NITs and other engineering colleges and more than 11 lakh students appear for the same every year.Apart from this, many state boards have their own exams for admissions into the colleges and many colleges give admissions based on the marks of class 12 board exams.

Government to give 75,000 worth of scholarships to the 1000 innovate minds

To raise the interest of children towards research and innovation HRD minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday announced that government will give scholarship worth of 75000 to the 1000 innovative minds under the proposed Prime Minister Scholarship scheme.Speaking on the occasion of fourth convocation of the Sri Sri University, Javadekar said that the government is spending 20,000 crore in building infrastructure to promote research in the country. “India lacks in innovation therefore, turn this adversary into your strength”, Javadekar said. The Minister also said that the government is also working on reducing the control of the UGC and AICTE over the universities. The intention behind this move is to give more autonomy to the institutions of higher education. Freedom is necessary for better research and innovation in the country.Fonder of the university Sri Sri Rai Shankar asked the students to face the challenge of the life with smile and confidence.He said "education is not stuffing the mind with information but building a strong personality and inculcating great human values. His purpose of setting up the University here was to bring the best of East and best of West to this land of Lord Jagannath".

Mumbai University: Deadline to apply for the law courses extended by the CET cell

The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test Cell informed the Bombay High Court on August 22 that is has decided to extend the deadline to August 31 for applying to Mumbai University's law courses. The commissioner of CET cell said that the admission to extend the deadline was taken as there is no response from the university about the results of the undergraduate students. He, however, added that “any further extension of the deadline would be difficult”.Initially, the deadline to apply for the law courses was August 5 but it was extended to August 18 in the light of the delay in results' announcement and now it has been extended to August 31.The announcement about the extension in the deadline was a major relief to the students who made it to the merit list of the CET but in the absence of the mark-sheets for the undergraduate courses were unable to secure the admissions. The university also told the high court that it is working hard to tackle the delay in the results but was unable to inform the court about the exact date of the result declaration. Rui Rodrigues, was representing the University in the court and asked for the time till August 24 to give clear picture about declaring the results.Rodrigues also told the court that the delay is primarily because of the technical glitches in the system.“These glitches, however, are being resolved. We have cancelled the leaves of all the teachers and asked them to concentrate only on assessing the answer sheets for now,” Rodrigues said.

Makhanlal Chaturvedi University to have 'Gau Shala' in their new university campus

According to the reports Makhanlal Chaturvedi University of Journalism and Mass Communication is planning to open a 'gau shala' in their new and upcoming 50-acre campus in Bhopal.Deepak Sharma, Registrar of the university, called it a “new experiment”.The 'gau shala' will be constructed on a 2-acre land within the university campus.Sharma further told that this plan didn’t need any approval from the higher education regulating body AICTE and today even scientists are showing concern for saving cows and are focused on promoting the benefits of cow dung, cow urine, milk, curd and ghee.At the March for Science rally, Aniket Sule, astrophysicist attached with Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education said, “The rally is not just to demand more funds for science. It is time scientists come together to speak about the shift we are seeing in government funds for research in cow urine. If we don't speak now, people will believe in validation of cow urine without evidence”.

Registrations for the Journalism course at the DU begins

The application process for getting admissions into the Delhi University's School of Journalism has started. The university is offering five year integrated course in Journalism- Bachelor of Journalism (BA) and Master of Journalism.Students are requested to submit their application forms well before the last date of the submission which is September 8 in order to avoid any the last minute hassle.The entrance exam will be conducted by the university on September 17 in two sessions, for the students who will opt English, timings will be 9am to 11am and for the students opting Hindi, the exam will be from 2pm to 4pm.The classes will begin from September 26.If, there are any vacant seats after three years (if, candidate decides to leave with the degree of Bachelor of Journalism), university will conduct the entrance exam for the students for the Post Graduation course.Registration fee for the examRegistration fee for the students from general category is INR 500 and for the students from SC/ST/PwD category is INR 250.EligibilityStudents with 50 percent aggregate marks in the class 12, irrespective of the stream, can apply for the course and for the PG course, a graduation degree from a recognized university is a requirement.SyllabusThe syllabus includes teaching of the four foreign languages (French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic) and two regional languages (Tamil and Bengali) and students have to select one foreign and one regional language.

DU released its merit based 11 cut-off list for the UG courses

The Delhi University has released its 11th cut-off list for the UG courses and students who are still seeking the admissions in the DU can check the released list to see if they qualify for the admission or not.The highest cut-off limit for the 11th list is set up by Indraprastha College for Women. The cut-off marks for Indraprastha College for Women are 96.5 percent for the seat in BA (honors) in Psychology.The other two colleges which followed Indraprastha College for Women closely in setting high cut-off for the admissions are Gargi College and Hindu college with 96.25 percent for the BA (honors) applied psychology and BA (honors) English respectively.The third highest cut-off is set by Hansraj College with 96 percent for the BSc honors mathematics.The Non-Collegiate Women's Education Board (NCWEB) also released its ninth cut-off list through the university and for this round the highest cut-off is set by the SPM College for the BA program at 70 percent at Miranda House. Interested students can report to the college on August 24 and 25 for taking admissions.

Untrained teachers need to be trained properly: Nagaland Education Minister

Tokheho Yepthomi, Nagaland Minister for School Education, called upon the untrained elementary school teachers and told them to undergo training as per the HRD ministry directive. "There is a standing order from Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) that all untrained elementary teachers have to be trained on or before March 31, 2019 as per the Parliament Amendment Act section 23(2) of the Right to Education," Yepthomi said as he addressed the second All Nagaland Government School Teachers conference in the state. He further said that it is important to see that no untrained teacher is allowed to continue their services in the schools for the greater benefits of the children."If any teacher cannot undergo training in line with the directives of Union MHRD, it will be better for those teachers to go on voluntary retirement in peace," he said.He further said that the government is considering about the possibility of absorbing the 1379 teachers after the HRD ministry terminated the scheme earlier, in April this year.Pointing out to a lot of things which need to be done in the department he said "we can only achieve our aims and objectives if we all put our heads together in mutual understanding with a sense of belonging from top to bottom"."While it may not be possible to bring drastic change to all problems in a day or month, it is very clear that if we all give our efforts, in we can contribute to radically different a getter answers to the problems that stand in the way of our society today," Yepthomi said.
