Dalit girl commits suicide over non-exemption of Tamil Nadu from NEET

A 17-year-old Dalit girl, S Anitha, committed suicide on Friday by hanging herself at her home. The girl was one of the petitioners in the Supreme Court against the implementation of the NEET exam in the Tamil Nadu for giving admissions into the medical courses. S Anitha's death came nine days after the Supreme Court told TN to follow the NEET merit list for the admission purposes. The Center also supported the move of the TN who was seeking the exemption from the NEET for one year but later it withdraw its support by deciding that it was 'bad in law'. Anitha scored 1176 marks out of 1200 in class XII and scored 199.75 out of 200 for engineering and 196.75 for medicine, and could have easily gotten a seat in either stream. According to her family she scored only 86 percent in the NEET. According to her family she rejected the offer to join the aeronautical engineering course at the Madras Institute of Technology because she wanted to become a doctor.In a recent interview with the Tamil channel, Anitha also described how helpless she was when she appeared for the NEET exam as the syllabus was unfamiliar.Health Minister C Vijayabaskar expressed shock over Anitha's death while actor Kamal Hassan accused the state government as it failed to protect the interest of its own city's people.Opposition leader MK Stalin said that state government and center are collectively responsible for Anitha's death.

The dream of clean India rests on students' shoulders

Students are 'cleanliness ambassadors' and in future will lead the PM Narendra Modi's vision of clean India, said Prakash Javadekar while speaking on the occasion of 2017-18 national award ceremony.He stressed on the need of the cleanliness in the country and said that it is high time that we all change our mindset and inculcate the habit of cleanliness in order to keep and make the country clean.He congratulated the winners of the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2017-18 and said that from next year the competition will also be open to the private schools. A statement from the ministry said "This year 2,68,402 schools from both central and state governments participated voluntarily in the competition which is in itself an achievement and a beginning of 'New India'". In the national competition 35 states and UTs participated in an online mode.After the participation, these schools were evaluated and awarded at the district and state levels. A total of 643 schools participated in the competition out which 172 schools were selected for the National awards for Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2016-17.Each winner school is given a price of INR 50,000 as a additional grant which they can utilize in the activities related to 'swachhta'.National level awards to the concerned District Collectors/District Education Officers of 11 districts with highest number of participation were also given.Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan were declared as the top three states with maximum number of schools in Five Star and Four star ratings.

Smart classroom inaugurated by Puducherry Chief Minister

In order to take the school education to the next higher level, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy inaugurated 'smart classroom' in the Thanthai Periyar Government Higher Secondary School.The facility of the smart classroom was provided by the Pondicherry Heritage Round Table 167 as a part of welfare project.Praising the initiative of the PHRT 167 CM said "the pro-active role by voluntary outfits to supplement government's efforts in development would go a long way for holistic growth in the Union Territory". He also said that the government will encourage such programs of the voluntary organizations as these will help the state and the nation in reaching the pinnacle of development in every sphere of life. Vice-Chairman of Area 2 of Round Table India N Venkataramani said that the smart classroom will help the students to have computer based education till class XII."This is in keeping with the current trend of high-tech educational programs reaching out to the students in rural and semi urban pockets', he said.

Mumbai University results delayed

On one side of the line many students of the Mumbai University are waiting for their results to be declared and on the other side students who were marked absent in the exams are queuing at their exam center for gathering the proof that they appeared for the exams. Students are gathering proof of their attendance even after the university said that students who appeared for the exam and are unable to see their marks shows that there marks are not available at the moment and they need not prove their attendance. According to the MU rules, if the student/s appeared for the exam is/are marked absent in the exam then they need to gather the proof of their presence from the exam center.Hemlata Bagla, principal of KC College, Churchgate, said that "students have been coming in to seek proof of attendance. Generally, the rule is if you are marked absent, you have to get your attendance to the exam house. For students it is the easiest way to find out at which point the error occurred.”This year, large numbers of students were marked absent in the exam and now, they are panicking. “I don't know what to do. My friends told me to get proof from the exam center that I appeared for the exam,” said an LLB student of New Law College, requesting anonymity. “We have clarified that if a student has been marked absent, it does not mean they were absent but that their mark for that particular paper is unavailable at the moment. It is a default setting in the new system wherein we have to mark the student absent to withhold the result in the reserved category,” said the acting director, Board of Examinations and Evaluation, Arjun Ghatule. The University also appealed the students not to panic and wait till university assesses all the papers. “There were a few problems both online and offline. They have been fixed. Students can be assured that their results will be made available. These results will be declared within 10-12 days,” said Ghatule.

IIM-A director Ashish Nanda: Sad to leave before the expiry of term

"The best time to quit is when you are sad and not when you are happy so this is the apt time for me to leave" shares Ashish Nanda, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad outgoing director.Ashish Nanda quits from his post after holding the position as the director of the IIM-A, for four years though he was appointed as a director for a period of five years. In an interaction with the media Nanda said "I want to leave when I am sad and not when I am very happy. I want to leave when reporters ask me why are you going than when are you leaving, so this is a good time. But since, you are from Gujarat so you are aware that the best food is the one that has salt and sugar in right proportions. Similarly, this is such a moment when I have a sense of achievement and fulfillment but a sense of nostalgia and sadness at the same time". As Nanda quits, Errol DʼSouza, Professor of Economics, and the Dean of Faculty at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has been chosen as the interim director of the institute, effective from September 2, 2017.Nanda also told media that the former director of IIM-A also suggested him not to wait for the last day to quit when Nanda sough an advise from the former director on the right time to leave.“Because during last days (of your term), there will be so much of politics being played around, the media starts digging up stories, people start jockeying with each other. If you are fond of ribbon-cutting and delivering convocation speeches then you are most welcome to stay, you will find many in the next two three months but if you want to do some work then forget it," suggested the former IIM-A director.“I am here not to cut ribbons but work. So I thought that I should choose the date when I am happy to feel that I can have good work till last day in-spite of wondering in my last days that what I am doing here. So the next day of the convocation, I told the chairman that I will leave on September 1, the day when I complete four years. For me it is a labor of love. I really like working here and putting in my energy,” Nanda elaborated on the reasons of stepping down.He also ruled out the questions and speculations of any differences between the board and government.

Absent students got 21 marks in the exam

On one side, there are hundreds of students who are complaining that they were marked absent in the exam despite having appeared for the exam; on the other hand, a student from the Government Law College claimed that she has been marked in the exam which she never took.The student appeared for sixth semester exams for five year LLB course in the month of April under University of Mumbai but missed the Indian Penal Code (IPC) paper. But when the results were declared she saw that she had scored 21 marks in the paper. “I was surprised to see I have secured 21 marks when I had not even appeared for the IPC paper,” she told The Indian Express. Despite all the efforts, Mumbai University is going through crisis in declaring the results of the students. A final year student of the New Law College said that she has cleared all her previous semester exams but the results of her final semester were withheld by the University for not clearing the lower examinations. “I don't have any back papers or failures in the previous semesters and yet, my results have been withheld,” said the student who did not wish to be named.The University said that it will look into the complaints on case-by-case basis and withheld results will be declared within next 10 days.“If the result is in the reserved list, it could be because the paper has not been evaluated. We are trying to complete all assessment at the earliest,” the official said.
