Dalit girl commits suicide over non-exemption of Tamil Nadu from NEET
A 17-year-old Dalit girl, S Anitha, committed suicide on Friday by hanging herself at her home. The girl was one of the petitioners in the Supreme Court against the implementation of the NEET exam in the Tamil Nadu for giving admissions into the medical courses. S Anitha's death came nine days after the Supreme Court told TN to follow the NEET merit list for the admission purposes. The Center also supported the move of the TN who was seeking the exemption from the NEET for one year but later it withdraw its support by deciding that it was 'bad in law'. Anitha scored 1176 marks out of 1200 in class XII and scored 199.75 out of 200 for engineering and 196.75 for medicine, and could have easily gotten a seat in either stream. According to her family she scored only 86 percent in the NEET. According to her family she rejected the offer to join the aeronautical engineering course at the Madras Institute of Technology because she wanted to become a doctor.In a recent interview with the Tamil channel, Anitha also described how helpless she was when she appeared for the NEET exam as the syllabus was unfamiliar.Health Minister C Vijayabaskar expressed shock over Anitha's death while actor Kamal Hassan accused the state government as it failed to protect the interest of its own city's people.Opposition leader MK Stalin said that state government and center are collectively responsible for Anitha's death.
