UGC soon to invite applications for the ‘Institutions of Eminence'
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will start inviting the applications from the institutes of higher education this week. Institutes which are interested in entering the top 100 can apply for the same.Higher Education Secretary K K Sharma said on Tuesday that the window for the applications will remain open for the duration of three months. Once the deadline expires, an empowered committee will evaluate all the entries and then finalize the names of 20 institutions by the March next year. These institutes will be declared as the 'Institutions of Eminence'. These institutions are proposed to have greater autonomy as compared to other higher education institutes. For example, these institutes will be free to decide their fee for the national and foreign students and can have course duration and structure which suits them the best. They will also be exempted from seeking the government approval before collaborating with the foreign universities except for the institutions which are based in MEA and MHAʼs list of negative countries.Once identified their target would be to break in top 500 bracket in world ranking and eventually in 10 year time in top 100.
