SC directed MCI to admit the duo with colorblindness in MBBS

SC directed MCI to admit the duo with colorblindness in MBBS

The go-ahead for the admission of the two students suffering from colorblindness a.k.a. Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) was given by the SC and now these students will be admitted in a MBBS course in Tripura. However, MCI had expressed its concerns about admitting the students suffering from CVD into MBBS course.A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar gave the decision in the favor of the students. The decision was given after a great deal of discussion between the expert committee appointed by the court. The committee discussed about various aspects of admitting these students into the MBBS course and suggested admitting them. The committee submitted a report which drew a line between colorblindness and CVD. The report concluded "in this context, color blindness has been dealt with adequately as an impediment, but Color Vision Deficiency does to have any embargo of any type whatsoever". After this the court directed that Pranay Kumar Podder and another person be admitted in the MBBS course in 2018-19 academic year. The MCI also supported the decision of the committee and court and said "person suffering from CVD shall be permitted…to undertake the examination and be admitted to MBBS course".Both the candidates were disqualified during the 2015 counseling as they were suffering from partial colorblindness. After this, both the candidates moved to the Tripura High Court where MCI pointed that candidates for MBBS must be able to identify the three primary colors.
