Telugu compulsory for classes I to XII in Telangana

Telangana government has decided to make Telugu language compulsory in school for classes from 1st to 12th. The language will be made compulsory for all the classes and in both public and private schools. In another decision, the state government decided that all the public and private establishments and institutions should display the organization's name in Telugu.“The CM has instructed all the educational institutions in the state, both private and public, to teach Telugu as a compulsory subject from 1st to 12th standard,” a release from Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Raoʼs office said last night. Rao also made it clear that only those educational institutes which will teach the Telugu as compulsory subject will be given permission and recognition to function. “I welcome the decision of the Telangana government to make Telugu a compulsory subject from first to 12th standards,” Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said.He also expressed hope that other states in the nation will follow the example of the Telangana state and will take steps to promote the regional mother tongue in their states. The main opposition Congressʼ deputy leader in Telangana Legislative Council, P Sudhakar Reddy, welcomed the move the state government to promote the Telugu language but said that the government must also keep in mind the interests of the other language minorities groups before implementing the policy.“Telugu must be promoted. But, linguistic minorities need to be kept in mind. Moreover, it is better if the state government convenes an all-party meeting to discuss the issue. It should not be a unilateral decision,” Reddy told PTI.
