Affordable soil testing solution developed by students from IIT Roorkee

A cost-effective soil testing solution has been developed by the students of IIT-Roorkee. The new soil testing system will help the farmers in boosting the productivity of their crops through the balanced use of fertilizers. In a statement, the institute said "the device called ‘Solving Nitrogen Application Problemsʼ (SNAP) to mitigate the ineffective use of fertilizers which leads to downsizing of the crop yield."This optical imaging application helps in determining the optimum input of fertilizers via 'Multi-spectral imaging' of the crop leaves. The programed camera module can be used to click the image of the leaves and determine the content of nitrogen in them.Team behind SNAP Ekdeep LubanaAnkit BagariaUtkarshSeth SaxenaAnisha Godha “Poor awareness and illiteracy among rural farmers forces them to believe that the low yield is due to insufficient usage of fertilisers. ‘SNAPʼ aims to bring the power of ‘Smart Soil Analysisʼ into the hands of the farmers,” it said. Ekdeep Lubana, B-Tech student, IIT Roorkee said, “Our main aim was to provide farmers with a low-cost and easy solution to determine the amount of fertilizer to be used”. “Team SNAP and the project stood out among 900 teams from more than 70 countries and emerged as the winner of the Ericsson Innovation Awards 2017 and were awarded 25,000 Euros,” the statement said.
