Union Minister put emphasis on teaching Sanskrit to the school children and said "without it, they will not come to know about the culture, tradition and heritage of the country." Sanskrit books have everything in them including the science, he said, stressing on the ways and means to ensure that children develop the liking for the ancient language. While addressing the function he said "If children are to be introduced to the culture, tradition and heritage of India, it is not possible without the knowledge of Sanskrit literature in detail.  Although these days, by surfing the internet for an hour or two daily, one can get knowledge of any subject in 20 to 25 days' time, but this kind of knowledge is not enough for a human being." Importance of character buildingWe have heard about terrorists with technical degrees or are graduates or post-graduates. They too have knowledge on different subjects. But, this is not enough as character-building is also important. It is attained through values, without which knowledge is never beneficial for the society," he said.He also asserted that character building is not possible only through knowledge but for it to happen diksha is also required which is the combination of thinking, direction, values and principles and helps in the all-round personality development of the person.

In an attempt to update the textbooks of the school syllabus, the Narendra Modi government is trying to do a comprehensive re-examination of the textbooks and for this to happen, the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will undertake the review process after more than 10 years when the National Curriculum was first drafted.The exercise for the re-examination of the syllabus is expected to be done soon by the Council's Department of Curriculum Studies, which is headed by the Prof Ranjana Arora.School textbook content, a controversial issueAccording to the reports most of the changes made in the textbooks have been a controversial issue especially, in BJP ruled states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra where allegation were made that about government trying to saffronise the education. List of changes made in the past School textbooks of the NCERT went under a major change after NCF was frmaed in 2005.Towards the end of the UPA government in 2014, a committee of 21 experts was setup in order to review the NCF.Last major change was introduced in the political science textbooks when six offensive drawing were withdrawn from the books following the protests in the parliament. Demonetisation and GST to be added into the textbooks In addition to all this, the council officials said "the review was meant to incorporate the developments in the past 10 years -- such as the goods and services tax (GST) and demonetisation." Statement for the NCERT official: "Demonetisation, which took place last year, is something that the textbooks don't carry currently. But this is something that students have to be taught. Similarly, if monsoon maps have been updated, they can be included in the books. We will know what all needs to be updated once all books are examined by our officials," said senior NCERT official.

Green school project launched by Tata Steels in association with TERI

Green School project was launched by Tata Steel on Friday in association with the TERI in order to create awareness about the environment issues in the school campuses. The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) will be actively involved in promoting environment awareness in classrooms and schools through activity based learning. TERI is a leading New Delhi based research institute which focuses primarily in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development.In the first phase the project will be launched by Tata Steel in 10 schools identified in Jharkhand and Orissa. The time duration of the project in these schools will be 15 months during which the main focus will be to create awareness through activities related to environment. "Promoting sustainable environmental practices through education and working with schools is an effort to create an awareness and sensitivity amongst students about their responsibility towards environment," said Chanakya Chaudhary, Group Director (Corporate Communication and Regulatory Affairs), Tata Steel."The project will promote a proactive engagement with schools through enhancement in understanding about local environment issues. We hope to touch the lives of students and teachers through the capacity building initiatives designed under the project and improve critical, inter-disciplinary and holistic problem-solving skills amongst them," said Livleen Kahlon, Associate Director (Environment Education and Awareness Area), TERI.

With the aim of promoting Sanskrit both in written and spoken form among the students of Maharashtra, the Maharashtra State Bureau of Text Book Production and Curriculum Research also known as Balbharti, revised the whole syllabus of the Sanskrit language for classes 8 and 9. Now the textbooks will be entirely in Sanskrit and even the subject will be taught in Sanskrit. New books will be more interactive According to the reports, the textbooks are being offered to students of English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati medium and are more engaging than their previous counterparts. In the new textbooks special emphasis are given to the pictorial representation, activity based learning, stories, songs and even small conversations which will make the learning process interactive, easy and engaging. Sanskrit in conversation to be promoted An official said, "If you see the earlier textbooks, even though the content was Sanskrit, often the head of questions such as 'Match the Following' or 'Fill in Blanks' was written in English or another language. Even some grammatical explanations were given in other languages." "But in the new books, everything is in Sanskrit only as we want the students to take complete interest in this language," he continued. "Earlier, students would view this language more like a bookish subject but the idea is to make them move to conversational Sanskrit. Hence, the new books have lots of pictures, small everyday conversations,diagrams," he said. When Balbharti officials were asked about the learning in difficulty one may face due to fact that now entire book is in Sanskrit they said, for words and concepts which are difficult QR codes have been given in the textbook. Students and teachers can scan them which will re-direct them to the webpage that explains the word. From there they can also look for the word in other additional languages.

The app has been named as 'MakeourKerala'.The main objective of the app is to enable individuals to expose the issues around their locality and to mobilize the additional support from the locality by creating actionable directives. About the app This app will help users to post their location, social issues and activities nearby.User can also share their views and sentiments. They can either follow or track the issues.Government, NGOs and individual can use this app to create events with details and date and can ask the public for their participation.The main aim of the app is to bring together like minded people with a common goal of making Kerala better together. Prof Sidhartha S Padhi, Assistant Professor, IIM-K said, "Through this app, we hope to achieve a strong platform where people come together for common goals that they have pledged to support. Our vision is to empower the people with the right data and tools to ensure accountability.'' The admin model of the app has been derived from the Wikipedia-based admin model which ensures 'crowd-sourced accountability model'. The admins will be selected by the users who in turn will be responsible for approving the posts.

Distance education bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) recently observed that various institutes, which are approved by the UGC are not only offering distance learning education but are also offering the option of online examination. After finding this, the regulator made it clear that degrees obtained by means of online examination will not be considered valid as regulator's rules don’t allow such tests to be conducted in the first place.According to the reports, a letter was written by the commission to all the open universities which said "These institutions had agreed to conditions such as "no online program leading to award of degree/certification, until a policy is framed and approved by the UGC." Currently there are thousands of students who are studying in the open universities of India. No approval for online examination by the UGC UGC never approved the online examinations due to the fat that these exams involve group of complexities such as secure systems, reliable network for connecting different exam centers and preparing question banks."UGC has laid no set parameters for open universities to conduct such examinations," said letter, barring the universities from conducting any online exams in the future. IGNOU in favor of online exams IGNOU University, India's pioneer university in the distance education said, it is now time to move towards the online examinations. "Regulations for conducting programs online should be considered on a priority basis. A lot has changed in the past many years and we need to embrace technology in education too," Vice Chancellor (in charge) Ravindra Kumar said. "We can use our study centers where online exams can be conducted, which will bring in greater transparency too. UGC should come out with regulations for online exams soon. IGNOU has never conducted any online examination'', he added.

Unemployment has hit the world big time. With India fighting the menace of unemployment, a recent report from the United Nation's messenger for education, Gordon Brown states that by 2030 more than 800 million students will be unemployed despite graduating from the schools.800 million is a terrifying number alone when viewed in relation to the unemployment but the worst part is, this number also represents world's half of the 1.6 billion children. Shortage of skilled workers Brown also said that there are 260 million children who are out of school and have been neglected and 40 million additional who are functionally illiterate.If this situation continues then there lack of skilled workers will lead to bleak future.Brown said that UN's goal is to ensure quality education for the every child but if actions are not taken now to ensure this than there will be no quality education for children by 2030, 2050 or even by 2100. Pointing on the lack of education and skilled manpower he also laid the proposal for setting an international finance facility for the education. Words of the Gordon Brown "We're effectively trying to double the education aid. Millions of children will remain on the streets rather than in school if the funding is not found," said Brown Commenting on the present scenario he said that children, especially girls, in conflict zones will suffer the terrible blow of loss of education.
