In an attempt to update the textbooks of the school syllabus, the Narendra Modi government is trying to do a comprehensive re-examination of the textbooks and for this to happen, the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will undertake the review process after more than 10 years when the National Curriculum was first drafted.The exercise for the re-examination of the syllabus is expected to be done soon by the Council's Department of Curriculum Studies, which is headed by the Prof Ranjana Arora.School textbook content, a controversial issueAccording to the reports most of the changes made in the textbooks have been a controversial issue especially, in BJP ruled states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra where allegation were made that about government trying to saffronise the education. List of changes made in the past School textbooks of the NCERT went under a major change after NCF was frmaed in 2005.Towards the end of the UPA government in 2014, a committee of 21 experts was setup in order to review the NCF.Last major change was introduced in the political science textbooks when six offensive drawing were withdrawn from the books following the protests in the parliament. Demonetisation and GST to be added into the textbooks In addition to all this, the council officials said "the review was meant to incorporate the developments in the past 10 years -- such as the goods and services tax (GST) and demonetisation." Statement for the NCERT official: "Demonetisation, which took place last year, is something that the textbooks don't carry currently. But this is something that students have to be taught. Similarly, if monsoon maps have been updated, they can be included in the books. We will know what all needs to be updated once all books are examined by our officials," said senior NCERT official.
