IIT-KGP to start its medical college by 2020

IIT-KGP is expected to have its first batch of MBBS students in its medical college by 2020-21.“The first phase of construction of Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Science & Research will get over by June this year and we are working towards making the hospital operational from 2018,” IIT-Kharagpur deputy director Prof Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya said.“Then, as per regulation, we can start offering MBBS program in another three-year time in 2020-21,” said Bhattacharyya, in-charge of setting up the Medical College. In the first phase of construction, hospital and ancillary building are getting ready and in second phase of construction, residential towers for the doctors, students and support staff will get ready. IIT-KGP has been granted permission by the Union HRD ministry to start its hospital with 400 beds and INR 150 crore has been sanctioned for the same. According to the plans, later, the hospital will have 750 beds and the project will cost around 230 crore and IIT-KGP plans to raise the remaining funds through donations. Speaking on the healthcare facilities the institute will offer Bhattacharyya said "We will be collating details of the patients by video graphing and with their permission can disseminate it to a doctor abroad. So if a patient wants to seek the opinion of a doctor in the US, he/she can easily do it." At the present moment the institute is busy in obtaining the equipment for cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, diagnostics, pathology and Out-Patients Department. The institute is also busy in setting up the society which will run the hospital and medical college.
