Common Engineering Entrance Exam goes on hold
Common Engineering Test, which was proposed by the AICTE, has been put on hold by the HRD ministry till it reaches a final consensus. Earlier, in March it was announced by the AICTE that the single window national level entrance exam will be held across the nation for getting admission into various engineering colleges from the next academic session in 2018.But this move faced the opposition from the states of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal governments following which HRD ministry felt that the states must be taken on board in this regard. “It is important to have consensus on the introduction of a common exam. So the plan has been put on hold for now,” an official who did not wish to be named said.“The common counseling provisions also need to be discussed with the states,” the official said. The cue for the common engineering test was taken by the HRD ministry from the NEET exam, which is a single window exam for getting admission into medical and dental colleges. The exam structure for getting admissions into engineering colleges is not uniform in India as CBSE conducts JEE-Mains exam for getting admissions into engineering courses. Some states have their own tests while some private colleges conduct their own exams.
