Ad-hoc teachers in DU go on hunger strike for permanent status

Ad-hoc teachers in DU go on hunger strike for permanent status

More than 200 teachers in DU who were appointed on ad-hoc basis went on hunger strike demanding that university absorb them as a permanent faculty member. These teachers were from various colleges ,which are functioning under the Delhi University, and observed a day long hunger strike at the Arts Faculty building where they used the opportunity to address their peers about the irregularities going on in the Delhi University. "There are a total of 200-250 teachers who are observing a day-long hunger strike... And another 1,500 are associated with the movement," Himanshu Singh, Assistant Professor (ad-hoc), Satyawati College (Evening), told IANS over the phone. "Some of us have been teaching us for more than ten years, some even more. Why are we not good enough for permanent status, when the university can trust us with teaching students, their evaluation, and their careers?" Singh added. He also said that ad-hoc teachers were hired by the university following the same process which they use to hire permanent teachers.Another ad-hoc teacher, Prem Kumar from Satyawati College said "they will also march to the Vice-Chancellor's office and present him with a charter on their demands."Even the DUTA (Delhi University Teachers Association) also extended their support in favor of the protesting ad-hoc teachers.
