Chancellor Hamid Ansari seeks report on Punjab University protest

A day after the clash between students and police, vice President Hamid Ansari of Punjab University sough a report on the clash inside the university premises. However, vice chancellor blamed that handful of people were responsible for engineering the violence in the University.Meanwhile, police arrested six more students for causing violence and said that initially sedition charges were included in the FIR on the basis of complaint registered by university officials but they were later removed.University officials said that police misinterpreted their complaint. "We have detained six more students in connection with yesterday’s protest,” Chandigarh SP Eish Singhal said here."When asked about the sedition charges the SP said that initially these charges were added in the FIR based on the complaints of PU authorities but later they were all dropped later. Police told that they had booked students under various charges such as rioting and damage to the public property. Ashwin Kaul, PU Chief security officer said "We never meant that the students raised slogans against the state. When we came to know that sedition charge was being added, we approached police and clarified that students raised slogans against UGC, MHRD and PU." Punjab University vice chancellor, Arun Kumar Grover said "PU chancellor Ansari had sought a report on this incident which he would submit. A handful of people engineered this protest, alleged the VC adding that he never expected students’ protest would lead to violence on the campus."He said that students throwing stones and indulging in violence is not acceptable and can tarnish the image of the PU globally. Speaking on the issue of fee hike, Grover said that University raised the fee in some courses in order to bring parity in their tuition fee.
