Fee hike in Private schools: Government sets the cap on 8 percent

The state government in Punjab has restricted the private schools from raising their fee more than by 8 percent on annual basis. The cabinet, on Wednesday, gave its nod to the Punjab State Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions Rules, 2017, which regulates the fees in private schools. In spite of the beginning of new session, the government told all the schools to put a limit on their fee hike. A government official said "After the rules are notified, the parents would be able to complain to the Divisional Commissioners if the schools in their wards hike fees by more than 8 per cent." The previous government had set up the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions Act, 2016 but could not implement it as it failed to name the enforcement agency for the same. In an attempt to streamline the education system and raise its standard in the state, a person of national eminence was appointed by the government in the field of Industry, Technology or Technical Education as Chairman of Board of Governors of Maharaj Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Bathinda.Similarly, it was also decided to appoint the chairman of the Board of Governors for the IK Gujral Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar.
