On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, DU students call to discard the caste system

In a public meeting, just two days ahead of Ambedakar's birth anniversary, students of DU called to root out the casteism from the from the higher education.The meeting 'Cast out casteism: University of Ambedakar's Dream' was held against the string of steps taken by the Ministry of Human Resource (MHRD). Students were not happy with the decisions were criticizing them.One such issue was the issue of granting autonomy  to the individual colleges in the university. "This is not autonomy. Autonomy was when we asked for freedom from the British. Autonomy means decentralization of power, not its opposite," Anil Chamaria, a noted journalist, said addressing students and teachers present at the open-air gathering. He also criticized a lot of college principles and said that they are stooges of political system and have no say in the administrative decisions."We are opposed to autonomy because that will lead to a steep increase in the fees charged from students. So far subsidized by the central government, colleges will have to raise funds by increasing the fees. The university will become an elite space, only for the rich," Aman Nawaz, a research scholar and member of All India Students Association (AISA), which organized the event.According to Nawaz there are seven colleges-- Hansraj, Venkateshwara, PGDAV (Evening and Morning both), Ramjas, St. Stephen's and SRCC-- which have asked to adopt the model and if the model becomes reality than lower caste students will become more vulnerable.
