Hindi to be made compulsory from classes 1-8

Hindi to be made compulsory from classes 1-8

In another step to promote the unity and national integrity across the nation, a PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court for seeking direction for the Center, States and UTs to make Hindi a compulsory subject for all students of classes 1 till 8. Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, Delhi BJP spokesperson and a lawyer said "the three-language formula provided for study of "Hindi, English and modern Indian language in Hindi-speaking states and Hindi, English and a regional language in the non-Hindi speaking states" and it is still unimplemented." Public servants and judges of higher judiciary who have studied in regional language and are serving in Hindi-speaking states, find it difficult to speak, read and write in Hindi. The filed plea is expected to come in hearing next week in the Supreme Court. "In order to promote fraternity, assuring dignity of individual and unity and national integration, study of Hindi should be compulsory for all the students of I-VIII standard through the country," the plea said. It also said the 1986 policy, adopted by the Parliament, was framed as a result of the demands from non-Hindi speaking states such as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tami Nadu. "This problem can be easily resolved by making study of Hindi compulsory for all the students of 1 to 8 standard in spirit of the Article 21A read with Article 343, 344, 348, 351 and preamble of the Constitution." the plea said.
