Malayalam compulsory till class 10 in Kerala



While addressing the media, Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan said that Malayalam will be taught compulsorily in all school in Kerala till class10, irrespective of the syllabus.An ordinance for the same has already been signed by the Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam.The new law also has the provision to take strict action, including a fine of Rs. 5000, against school authorities if they fail to obey the new law. Other legal actions can also be taken.The syllabi to be followed in the state will include those of Kerala Education Board, the Central Board of Secondary Education and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Board.Currently, students are being provided the option between English and Malayalam and some other schools also provide French as another option.Vijayan said that this law is not applicable to foreign nationals or to the students who are studying in Kerala but hail from other states. The law also states that from now own if students will not be penalized if found speaking in Malayalam inside the school premises.
