Punjab University told police to drop sedition charges against the students



Chandigarh police books 66 students on sedition charges for causing violence inside the campus of Punjab University over the issue of fee hike but the university authorities told police to drop the serious charges against all the students. Ashwani Kaul, Chief Security Officer of the University, wrote to the police that student's violent clash with the police and slogans raised by them were not against the state but against University Grants Commission and Human Resource Development Ministry. For causing violence in the University, police booked 66 students for rioting and then for sedition. Police said that sedition charges were added on the complaint from university officials.When students were protesting inside the university against the massive fee hike for various courses 50 people including students, policemen and journalists were injured and for which the police took 52 students into custody.The fee hike, applicable from session 2017-18 academic session, was opposed by various student unions of Punjab University such as Students for society, Punjab University students, Students of Punjab University and Students organization of India.The university is facing financial crisis as the grants from center and Punjab government were not flowing properly and regularly.
