Tripura schools to follow the NCERT curriculum

Tripura schools to follow the NCERT curriculum

Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the Tripura Government has decided to adopt the curriculum as prescribed by the NCERT over the curriculum prescribed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). Education board of Tripura, Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), is currently following the SCERT prescribed curriculum but it has not yielded the desired results and therefore the government has decided to switch to the NCERT curriculum. This will give a boost to the state education system. "It is more likely that CBSE pattern syllabus and tabulation system will be followed at the school level for better outputs," he said. "A six-member expert committee headed by former Vice-Chancellor of Tripura Central University Prof Arunoday Saha has been constituted to prepare a roadmap for adopting NCERT curriculum. Once the committee submits its finding, the government will take an appropriate decision," Nath said. The education minister also told that two officials of SCERT had gone to the NCERT in Delhi to discuss the way to adopt the NCERT curriculum and soon will submit a report on the same. He further said that the government wants to adopt the curriculum at the earliest.

Cross culture discussions not dispute are necessary for the societys growth: Kovind

Cross culture discussions, not dispute are necessary for the society’s growth: Kovind

On Wednesday, Ram Nath Kovind stressed the importance of delivering value-based education to the children as it helps in promoting a healthy cross-culture discussion rather than dispute which is necessary for the growth of the society. "Lessons that a child imbibes in the school that may not be formally tested in the board examination, but these are the lessons of culture, character, compassion and courage. The child who internalizes these values will always be sensitive towards the world outside," he said. Kovind was present on the inauguration ceremony of the Sadhu Vaswani International School at Sadhu Vaswani Mission. He also took a moment to reflect on the contributions of some of the great people from Pune such as Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule, M G Ranade, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar in the field of education. "Each one of them placed an emphasis on education, the culture of discussion rather than that of dispute, and of addressing the disagreement while being mindful of the other person's dignity," he said. "Pune has been a center of education for Maharashtra and for the country. The story of modern India owes much to the educational, reformist and progressive ideas that have flowed from this city and for which our nation is truly appreciative," the president said. He also shed the light on the efforts of the Sadhu Vaswani and described him as one of the greatest nation builders who taught everyone how to prevent the cultural background with the techniques of the modern science. Other than Kovind other remarkable leaders who were present on the occasion were BJP patriarch Lal Krishna Advani, Maharashtra Governor K Vidyasagar Rao, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar and Dada J P Vaswani. Kovind also unveiled the statue of the Ramabai Ambedkar, who was the wife of Babasaheb Ambedkar. "Like Babasaheb, Ramabai also contributed towards the eradication of untouchability and social equality. Her life is inspirational for every Indian woman," he said.

More information about ancient India to be included in class VI to X books

More information about ancient India to be included in class VI to X books

Ancient Indian knowledge, tradition, and practices will find more space in the textbooks of classes 6 to 10. The books for the students of classes 6 to 10 have been restructured to add more information about the ancient Indian Philosophy, Ayurveda, yoga etc. Last year, NCERT decided to review the textbooks of classes 6 to 10 and decided to implement the changes in the contents of the books. For quite a sometime political parties such as BJP and RSS have been demanding to add more information about country’s past in textbooks. With new additions to the content, students will now have a better understanding of the glorious past of India. According to the reports from the Indian express, a comparison between old and new books revealed that additional content is added not only in the textbooks of the History but also, in other textbooks such as science and Geography. A senior official from the NCERT said that all the changes in the text books have been made according to the feedback received from the customers. As of now, NCERT has made 1334 changes in the textbooks which include corrections and updating the new data. The National Curriculum Framework was drafted in 2005 and this is the first comprehensive review of the textbooks by the NCERT since then.

Jadavpur University to collaborate with the Kolkata based central research institutes

Jadavpur University to collaborate with the Kolkata based central research institutes

In its new move to provide more quality education, Jadavpur University succeeded in establishing direct institutional collaboration with various research institutes, which are in or around the state. As of now, only 10 universities have been chosen for the task and Jadavpur University is one among them. "This once again is a recognition of excellence in teaching learning process which JU is attaining. There was always a dichotomy between the huge amount of financial support given to central research institutes compared to the state universities although the scientists did not have the exposure to the teaching-learning process in the universities. At the same time, the varsity teachers couldn't avail of the excellent infrastructure facilities in the research institutes. This lack of convergence is now being addressed. We can do joint research projects and joint supervision of Ph.Ds. his will have a multiplier impact on society for the  development of knowledge economy," said vice-chancellor Suranjan Das. From the entire state of West Bengal, Jadavpur University is the only university chosen by the government for the task. "This will enable JU to access to infrastructure facilities of central research institutes located in and around Kolkata like the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Central Glass and Ceramics Research Institute, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, SN Bose Institute, Bose Institute, Indian Association of Cultivation of Science and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre," added Das. The scheme will open new gates of the opportunity in research and will immensely help in the joint supervision of the PH.D. dissertations.

SPPU joins hands with the NFAI to start a course in film studies

SPPU joins hands with the NFAI to start a course in film studies

Department of Media and Communication Studies (DMCS) at Savitribai Phule Pune University has joined the hands with the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) to introduce a course in film studies where students will be able to learn about the history, motifs and methods of the various cinemas in India. The course will be year long and will only accept 25 students at DMCS for admissions. A DMCS official said “the course is a flexible program of study, providing students with opportunities to explore areas of film theory, Indian cinema history and culture, as well as research and applied practical knowledge in archiving exclusively in the setting of various regional cinemas.” The main aim of the course is to enhance the professional careers of the students as well as those who are seeking to pursue doctoral studies. The course is an excellent opportunity for the students who are new to the area and will them to establish foundations who wish to study films. Dr Madhavi Reddy, head of department, DMCS, said that the process for introducing the diploma started two years ago. “At the moment, no other Indian university is offering a specialized ‘Indian film studies program. Most of the existing courses look at global cinema with more focus on Soviet, Italian or other cinema. So why can’t we start studying our own cinema especially since every state in our country has its own distinct cinema? The idea is to go beyond Bollywood and that’s the reason behind introducing two optional papers each on Marathi and Telugu cinema,” said Reddy. She further added that the expert faculty will teach and guide the students in their research. “At the department, we have a long tradition of media research. Many of our students have done PhD in film-related topics and we have been encouraging research on Indian cinema. The course will be an academic one, addressing serious concerns in Indian film studies. We will also focus more on original research,” said Reddy. Students who hold a bachelor’s degree in any discipline are eligible to apply. The fee for the students from Maharashtra in INR 21,550 and for others it is 41,156. Entrance test for admissions will be conducted in June.

New English School to admit girls from the new upcoming academic session

New English School to admit girls from the new upcoming academic session

A 138-year-old school, New English School, Pune, was started by the Bal Gangadhar Tilak along with other freedom fighters. From the upcoming new academic session, the school has decided to break the gender stereotypes and will allow the admissions of the girls. The school is run by the Deccan co-education society and was co-ed until 1936. Later on, the education society started another schools by the name Ahilyadevi High School, which was exclusively for the girls. “Gone are the days when boys and girls were taught indifferent schools,” said Nagesh Mone, the newly appointed principal of the school. "While growing up, the students should know that men and women are equal and in order to break the gender stereotypes, it is important to start co-education at the early stage of schooling so that a holistic and gender-neutral atmosphere can be created," he said. He said that students who study in co-ed systems have mutual respect, high interaction and healthy competition. "The students interact cautiously when they are together in co-ed schools. Some sort of power balance always works in the background, and it is also needed to enhance the overall quality of the education," Mone said. As of now, 25 girls have taken the admission in the new academic session, which will begin soon. The school management hopes that boys will embrace the change and will help in enhancing the standard of the education.

A student with low attendance cannot appear for the exams: Bombay HC

A student with low attendance cannot appear for the exams: Bombay HC

The Bombay High Court, in a decision, said that it cannot allow a homeopathy student with a low attendance to appear for the first year repeat examinations. The student has been held as ineligible by the college due to poor attendance in college. Fakeha Badami had filed a petition in which she claimed that the attendance was poor because the college would not allow her to attend the lectures as she wears hijab. She is a student at Sai Homoeopathic Medical College, located in Bhiwandi. The college's lawyer, Sahil Salvi, denied the allegations and said that she is not being allowed in the exams due to her poor attendance. "The college is willing to let her appear for the second repeat exams, scheduled to be held in December this year, provided she attends all therepeat lectures that will be conducted till November," Salvi told a vacationbench of justices S J Kathawalla and A S Gadkari today. The court accepted this statement and said, "We hope after she attendsthe repeat lectures and appears for the exams the college allows her toattend the regular lectures and not disallow her then saying she iswearing hijab." Salvi clarified the matter and said that hijab was never the issue. "She (Badami) has attended only 28 classes. How can we allow her to attend exams now? She is doing a medical course. Without attending the requisite number of classes we cannot allow her to appear for the exams," Justice Kathawalla said. In her petition, Badami had said that she enrolled in 2016 batch in the Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery course in the college. The college is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Services (MUHS). She further claimed that she and several other students who wore hijab to the college were denied from entering the premises. A new study reveals that learning Physics makes the brain more active

A new study reveals that learning Physics makes the brain more active

A new study has shown that parts of the brain, which are not used while learning science becomes active when exposed to the world of Physics. The finding was published in the journal Frontiers in ICT, which shows that it is possible to change the brain’s activity by exposing it to the different forms of instructions. The study was done using the fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging), which measures the flow of the blood in the brain. The researchers looked at the brain map to see the active regions of the brain busy in solving a physics problem or reasoning task. "The neurobiological processes that underpin learning are complex and not always directly connected to what we think it means to learn," said Eric Brewe, an associate professor at Drexel University in the US. More than 50 volunteers took part in the study and they were taught Physics using ‘Modeling instructions’ in which students are the active participants in the learning process. Before students participated in the class, they were asked to take a test while undergoing fMRI. Students were again asked to take the test after the completion of the cost, which was again monitored by the fMRI. During the pre-instruction scan, the lateral prefrontal cortex and parietal cortex, sometimes called the brain's "central executive network" were involved in problem-solving. "One of the keys seemed to be an area of the brain, the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, that generates mental simulations," Brewe said. "This suggests that learning Physics is an imaginative process, which is not typically how people think of it," he said. After the completion of the class, pre and post learning scans were revealed and researchers noticed an increased activity in the frontal poles. Frontal poles are linked to the learning. The other area which activated during the learning was the posterior cingulate cortex, and this area is linked to the episodic memory and self-referential thought, researchers told. “These changes in brain activity may be related to more complex behavioral changes in how students reason through physics questions post- relative to pre-instruction," said Brewe. "These might include shifts in strategy or an increased access to physics knowledge and problem-solving resources," he said.

CBSE Class 12 results | Students guide to handle post-result stress

CBSE Class 12 results | Student’s guide to handle post-result stress

The wait of more than 11 lakh students was over with the CBSE declaring the class 12 results yesterday. Now, that students know how they performed in the exams, it is a matter of rejoice for some and heart break for the others. It is not uncommon for many students to feel extremely disheartened if the results are not up to their expectations. "The race to ace board examinations results in students and parents both experiencing great anxiety during the results season. This has serious repercussions on the mental well being, prospects, and social behavioral patterns of students," says Prateek Bhargava, Founder & CEO of Mindler. It is therefore, very important to remember that the mark-sheet does not determine the worth of the a person and neither low marks in some exam can decide the future. "Once a student enters professional life, their marks and college tag start carrying less and less weight. Ultimately one's skills, talents and knowledge will speak greater volumes about their caliber," he adds. Below are some points, which will help the students and parents to tackle post-result stress: For students Instead of getting emotional and anxious over the marks take a hard look at them and see what you have actually got.Evaluate your options, Don’t brood over what has been done instead focus on the futureKeep yourself in the focus and don’t mark yourself with labels by comparing your result with your friends’ results.Think practically and set your mind right. Weaknesses can be overcome with the practice. Exams show what you have done this year. These are not the prophecies, which will remain true for the rest of your life. For Parents Keep your expectations in check and more importantly practical. If your child did not score good marks then keep your calm. He is already disheartened and needs you the most during this time.Work with your child and help him improve his performance for the future exams as these exams were just the beginningDon’t worry about the social circle because it is your child that matters the most, not the neighbors. If he seems to be in stress don’t hesitate to take him to the counselor.

Now skill Development courses in the Government colleges of Punjab

Now skill Development courses in the Government colleges of Punjab

The Punjab government is planning to provide students with the skill development courses in all the state-run institutions and polytechnic colleges. This effort from the government is a part of a campaign under which government is trying to provide employment to every household. The new initiative will be a huge boost for the government’s ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar' campaign and will offer the courses varying from 3 to 6 months in duration under the Punjab Skill Development Mission, Channi, the Technical Education and Industrial Training and Employment Generation minister said. "Dropouts or semi-literates will also be able to take admission in these skill development courses and attain free training," he said. The cost of training is INR 10,000 to 15,000 per student but the cost will be borne by the government. Initially, these courses will be introduced in the 22 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) and 10 polytechnics and later the scheme will be expanded to add more such colleges and institutions. The institution heads will be required to submit a report on the subjects they wish to introduce. Channi has also instructed all the heads of the colleges to talk with the industries in their areas and ask about the skills they look in an employee once they have passed the college. “The institutes exhibiting credible performances would get special incentive besides being honored,” Channi said.

Schools in Delhi to refund the fees with interest

Schools in Delhi to refund the fees with interest

Aam Aadmi Party is going all out against the private schools which are charging an exorbitant fee from the parents. Under it new initiative, 'rendering education as a service' the government has asked the schools to refund the fees to the parents. Any school, who will fail to do so will have to face the strict action from the government. Schools have been told not only to refund the fees but to refund the fee with 9% interest rate to the parents. As of now, the government has sent notice to the 575 schools in the state. A few days earlier, in a similar incident, the government asked two schools to roll back their fee hike. In another incident, the government derecognized one of the private schools in the city because it failed to provide free uniform and books to the children from the EWS category. 'For the first time in the country, schools are being disciplined. They are not being allowed to hike fees arbitrarily. Many schools are being made to return hiked fees. Because there is an honest government in Delhi,' the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had tweeted then. This initiative of the government of Delhi is getting lots of attention on Social Media.

SSC paper leak 2017 | CBI registered FIR and raided several locations

An official, on Wednesday, told that CBI has registered an FIR in the SSC 2017 exam paper leak row and also conducted raids on multiple locations across the country. SSC Tier 2 exam was conducted in the month of February and it was alleged that tier 2 paper was leaked. CBI, on Wednesday, conducted raids on 12 locations, which also included the offices of the SIFY Technologies. SIFY is a company who was contracted by the SSC to conduct the Tier 2 exam in Noida. A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official said that "the decision was taken after the investigators found enough material in the matter". A preliminary inquiry was conducted by the agency in the month of March after they received enough evidence from the Central Government related to the matter. The CBI enquiry into the matter was recommended by the SSC. SSC conducts the exams to recruit the personnel for the subordinate services. Tier 2 exams were conducted by the SSC from Feb 17 to 22. After the news of the paper leak spread, there were protests by the students against the SSC. After the probe was ordered, SSC decided not to declare the results till the probe was over. Immediately after the spread of the news about the alleged scam, many students gathered to stage a protest outside SSC office at CGO complex in national capital. More than 30 lakh students had registered for the SSC CGL exam, which was conducted to fill about 8000 vacancies in 35 different ministries. Governor Satya Pal Malik rated the universities of Odisha better than those of Bihars

Governor Satya Pal Malik rated the universities of Odisha better than those of Bihar’s

Governor and chancellor of Bihar and Odisha Satya Pal Malik said that the universities in the Odisha are performing way better than the universities in Bihar. However, he was concerned about the fact that the none of the universities from either state managed in the top 100 list of the universities. "I am also the chancellor of universities in Bihar but I am really happy to share that universities in Odisha are doing far better than their counterparts in Bihar, Malik said. Unlike Bihar where mafia raj rules the education system, exams are not conducted in fair means and academic calendar does not exist, there is no such problem in Odisha, he pointed out. Of late a number of reform initiatives have been taken for bringing transparency and fairness in the education system in Bihar and I would like to replicate a few here also like the common entrance test for all the  universities," said Malik. Malik further said to motivate all the higher education institutes that they must make constant efforts and take new initiatives to improve their research quality and education. He also stressed the fact that use of technology should be given priority in all educational fields. He then drew attention to the need of the students' union elections and said, "I am an output of students politics and there are several bright examples of political leaders who started their career from students' union elections. University authorities must ensure a fair and violence- free election in educational institutes." He then addresses the VCs of the universities and urged them to improve the industry-academia interface and sign MoUs with other universities and institutions to increase the quality of the research. Vice chancellor of BPUT, Chittaranajan Tripathy said, "We have decided to make internship mandatory from first year of BTech courses from the next academic session so that students will get better field exposure."

Parents protest in BHUBANESWAR: Demanding act to regulate the private schools

Parents protest in BHUBANESWAR: Demanding act to regulate the private schools

On Tuesday, hundreds of parents gather in scorching heat to stage a protest. These parents were demanding the formation of an act to regulate the private schools of the state. These parents under the patronage of the Odisha Parent Associations' Forum alleged that government has been neglecting their demands to keep tight check on the private schools of the city. "It is really strange that the government has been supporting private school owners instead of helping the parents. The parents have been literally bleeding through their noses, extorted and harassed by the school authorities, but there is no one to listen to our pleas," said Sanjukta Panigrahy, an agitating parent. According to the sources, these parents were angry about the unjustified fee hikes by the private schools and demanded the formation of a fee regulatory committee. Recently, the committee was formed by the government with chariman of some leading schools as members. The committee also included some parents as the members. "Interestingly the committee has been formed overnight without any statutory provisions. The members are chairman of some leading private schools. Moreover, without having an Act there committee and its decisions have no validity," said another parent. One of the parents said “We have submitted a draft Act by studying that of other states, but government officers in the school and mass department don't even bother to listen to us,. So we have decided to intensify our movement till the act and rules are formed," said another parent. Parents alleged that schools have introduced costly methods of study and forcing the parents to pay. When parents complained, schools say that take your kid to another school. "The Supreme Court had directed that schools can increase fees by 10 to 15% annually but the schools have been increasing it by 15% every year. Forming a committee without an act is also a violation of the Apex court order," Panigrahy added.

International applications to the US Universities are declining

International applications to the US Universities are declining

Nearly 40 percent of the US Universities are witnessing the decline in the applications from the international students and recruitment professionals have reported about the families being worried about the visas and less-welcoming climate of the country. In the survey, more than 250 colleges participated. The survey was done as a response to concern among the international educators “that the political discourse surrounding foreign nationals in the US leading up to the November 2016 US presidential election could be damaging to international student recruitment efforts”. Of all the institutions participated in the survey, 39 percent responded the decline in the applications, another 35 percent responded the increase and rest 26 percent responded no change in the number of applications. While the decrease is not witnessed by the majority of the colleges still continuous increase in the international enrollments has become a standard norm among the colleges and universities of the US. Many universities participating in the survey also reported a considerable decrease in the number of international applicants from India and China. The two countries together nearly constitute half of all the international students in the US. Other than India and China, Middle-east, Asia, and Latin America are the areas from where the numbers of students have declined in significant numbers. A press release mentioned the following concerns are most cited from the students of various regions: “Perception of a rise in student visa denials at US embassies and consulates in China, India, and Nepal.”“Perception that the climate in the US is now less welcoming to individuals from other countries.”“Concerns that benefits and restrictions around visas could change, especially around the ability to travel, re-entry after travel and employment opportunities.”“Concerns that the executive order travel ban might expand to include additional countries.”

President talked about the importance of research to the graduates from IISER

President talked about the importance of research to the graduates from IISER

On the occasion of the seventh convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) president talked to the students about the importance of research and innovation in the field of education. "The purpose of scientific research is threefold," said Kovind as he noticed that Mohali has become a hub for the knowledge economy, information technology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. "First, science and technology must continue to play a role in nation-building. As our nation evolves and as our society changes, our needs too are transformed. Yet, science and technology will always be required to find answers to developmental questions," he said. The President said that the country today is facing many questions, which ranges from battling climate changes to providing low cost healthcare system from overcoming the problems of water scarcity to build sustainable cities. "Second, science and technology have a symbiotic relationship with business and industry. Product invention and process innovation; converting the learning of the lab into commercially viable products; using technology to promote efficiency, enterprise and employment - there is so much science and commerce can do together," he said. Citing the examples of the Silicon Valley in the California and Bengaluru, he said that IISER must play similar role in Mohali. "Third, institutions of scientific education and research are important in themselves for blue-sky innovation and for expanding the frontiers of knowledge. This is the fundamental and to my mind most critical value of scientific research," he said. Kovind further said that the scientific research keeps the curiosity alive. This path demands an unexpected amount of patience but the results can be very fruitful for the human society. "It is my privilege to travel to convocations across the country. I find this commendable performance of our young women, of our society's daughters, to be something of a national trend. They are consistently outscoring their male counterparts. This is a step forward in the cause of gender equity and in making India a developed society," he said.

SMS School Harassment case | A student tries to kill herself

SMS School Harassment case | A student tries to kill herself

Lately SMS school, one of the premium schools in the Jaipur city, has been in news a lot because several parents and students alleged that the teachers of the schools are harassing the students. One such student, after getting fed up of the harassing activities, tried to commit suicide and slashed her nerves. The committee has registered the complaints against the school in 8 different matters. During its initial investigations, the committee found that the exam answer sheets of the student (who registered the complaint and later attempted suicide) were missing from the school’s premises and had asked the school to present them before the committee by Friday. According to the sources, school allowed the failed students to write the exams again. The school conducted the test for the same but never update the mark-sheets with the new numbers. As a result, failed student is still failed even after re-writing the exam. According to the sources, various teachers in the schools are pressuring the students to take private coaching from them and when students refuse they threaten them to fail in the exams. Such pressure is most on the students of classes 9 to 11.

Aligarh Muslim University is one of the best among the global universities

Each student may have its own reasons for choosing to study in the Aligarh Muslim University but one thing is certain that the teaching at the university is world class. And this point was further justified when the US Education News ranked AMU as the second best among the Indian universities. It also ranked AMU at 305th place for the study of Biology and Bio-Chemistry and at 460th place for studying the physics and department of Math at 129th in the world. AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor said that university is proud of its efforts and hard workings, which reserved it a spot among the best universities around the globe. He further added that this shows why AMU is one of the best and why it attracts the talent from India and around the world. Meanwhile, Prof M Mursaleen (Chairperson and Coordinator, DRS-SAP-II Programme) said “the Department of Mathematics has a unique achievement as it is the only mathematics department from an Indian University in the top slots.” US Education news monitors the higher education data from the world’s leading research institutes and ranks them accordingly. Its rankings are highly referred by the students when it comes to choosing the best university to study.
