22 DU colleges disregard UGC norms for setting complaints panel

Of the 50 colleges under the DU, 22 were found in contempt of UGC’s (University Grants Commission) guidelines in setting up Internal Complaints Committee and electing students representatives democratically. UGC mandated the formation of ICC in colleges/universities to prevent the sexual harassment of the women at the workplace. According to the guidelines, the committee will consists of teachers, non-teaching staff, student representatives and an external member and a gazette notification for the same was issued in 2016. According to the survey, many DU colleges formed the ICC only this year. The survey was done by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). In the survey NSUI found that not even half of the respondents were aware of the formation of the ICC and 70 percent respondents said that the names and contact details of the members were not made public and there have been high incidents of the sexual harassment in the campus.
