Violence over Jinnah Portrait at AMU

Violence over Jinnah Portrait at AMU

Amid the unrest over the Jinnah Portrait at AMU, internet services were suspended. District magistrate Chandra Bhushan Singh said “there will be no internet services from 2 pm today to 12 midnight tomorrow”. “It had come to the administration’s notice that some anti-social elements could vitiate communal harmony by spreading rumours through videos, using internet services,” the orders said. Violence broke out at the university campus when outsider barged in and demanded that the portrait of Jinnah be removed from the students’ union office. “The situation in Aligarh is under control. We are watchful and will not let any untoward incident take place,” said Om Prakash Singh, the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP). Six people were injured in the incident when police fired the teargas to disperse the crowd.
