IIIT-Delhi working on creating man-less E-Rickshaw

In order to provide urban India with a better connectivity, The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is working on creating a driverless E-Rickshaw.As of now, the vehicle is being designed to run on the pre-defined routes. After completion, the vehicle would start its functioning within the campus premises and later will provide connectivity on the real roads. "It will do autonomous static obstacle avoidance, lane following, read basic traffic signals, follow speed limits, and navigate through a 3D map," Head of Infosys Centre for Artificial Intelligence at IIIT-Delhi, Mayank Vatsa, who is overseeing the project, said. The project began in April 2016, when the research center was founded."Our current choice of vehicle platform is an electric rickshaw, and currently, we are working on providing shuttle service within the IIIT-Delhi campus," Vatsa said.Other members in the team include Dr Sanjit Kaul, Dr Saket Anand, Dr PB Sujit along with Ph.d students of the institution."We are also hoping to replicate the above on Mahindra's electric car which we received from the company as part of the Mahindra Rise Driverless Car Challenge," he said.

What is the Difference Between Big Data and Hadoop?

What is the Difference Between Big Data and Hadoop?

A common query amid a lot of IT professionals is the difference between Big Data and Hadoop. The terms are often interchanged for one another as a lot of people fail to understand the difference between the two. The increasing popularity of Hadoop certification and Big Data has further added to the confusion.  The reality is that Big Data and the open-source Hadoop program are actually complementary to each other and cannot be compared. In simple words, you can think of Big Data as a problem and Hadoop program as a solution to resolve the problem. While Big Data is an ambiguous and complex as...

PTU recruitment: More irregularities surfaced in the vigilance probe

PTU recruitment: More irregularities surfaced in the vigilance probe

Rajneesh Arora revealed that apart from the irregularities in the recruitment of the newly created posts of Coordinators and Facilitators (C&F), data operators and attendants were also recruited afresh by the university allegedly in contravention of rules.Dr. Arora remained PTU VC from 2008-2014.“Committing irregularities in appointments was not a new phenomenon for PTU authorities, but illegally appointed employees from an earlier time were adjusted afresh under the tenure of V-C Arora by twisting the norms by PTU officials,” said a senior VB Officer requesting anonymity. In early 2000, a case of appointing 90 new employees came into light. All these employees were appointed without issuing any formal advertisement. A vigilance probe was also marked in 2002 in this regard. All these people were recruited as clerks, data operators, attendants and computer operators etc. and after the probe VB ordered sacking of all the recruited employees. “But PTU authorities found an innovative way to adjust all those and instead of sacking those, PTU in 2010 advertised 200 posts for regular clerical staff. Basic eligibility for these posts was changed multiple times by PTU officials to facilitate the adjustment of the earlier illegal recruitment. And 90% of that old staff, around 84 people, was adjusted by the PTU afresh,” said VB sources.According to the sources, PTU received around 8000 applications for the 200 posts then.

Dispelling the myths of E-learning

Dispelling the myths of E-learning

After graduation many candidates today cannot land a decent job out on the market and those who do, most of them are working for the petty amount of money. I remember, one of my friend after 4 years of graduation in CSE (Computer Science Engineering) landed a job of 5000 per/month as a developer. This money today is not sufficient to pay the rent today even when you are living on sharing basis, forget about the other expenditures. After sometime he started working in two companies -- one during the day and in another during the night. Such is the situation of many graduates today in India bec...

IISER to offer PhD programs to foreign students in six subjects

IISER Pune is all set to launch Ph.D. programs in six different subjects for international students from the next academic year. The two-year doctoral research called i-PhD is one of a kind in the nation and will be offered in subjects like physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, earth and climate Sciences (ECS) and humanities and social sciences (HSS). Sharing details about the program with The Indian Express, Dean Doctoral Studies Girish Ratnaparkhi said, “We are keen to recruit talented students from abroad, give them an opportunity to undertake Ph.D. research in India, allow them to work in laboratories here where they can attempt to solve important research problems. The program aims to raise the profile of our institute internationally and hosting international students is part of the process. We believe that recruiting international students will also add value to the existing Ph.D. program, making it healthier and stronger.” Pune is a hub of education and with this move, IISER will bring in more international students to the city. CCTVs will allow parents to monitor their child in real-time in school

CCTVs will allow parents to monitor their child in real-time in school

After holding a review meeting on the matter of installing CCTV cameras in all the government schools in Delhi, CM Kejriwal said that parents will be given access to the cameras which will allow them to see their child in class in real-time.The meeting was attended by Education Minister Manish Sisodia, PWD minister Satyendar Jain, Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash and officials of the department of education. The step is being taken to prevent any further tragedies like the murder of a seven-year-old in private school in Gurgaon and rape of toddler in a school in Gandhinagar.Last year, CBSE also issued a notice to all the affiliated schools and asked them to make the safety of the children a top priority on the school premises. A government official said, “Taking stock of the progress of the project, the CM said that the process of installation of CCTVs in schools should start within three months.”He further added that education minister, secretary education, and director education would “have the rights to view any classroom of any Delhi government school through the app at any point in time.” “There would be an auto complaint system to check non-functioning of any CCTV in the schools. The auto system would itself lodge a complaint and it will go to the system integrator who would then rectify the camera.” Kejriwal, meanwhile, said: “Each of the parents will be given access to the cameras so that they can see their child studying in class on a real-time basis on his/her phone. This will make the whole system transparent and accountable and would ensure the safety of kids.” “The auto system would itself lodge a complaint and it will go to the system integrator who would then rectify the camera.”A senior official of the education department added, “There have been more than one cases in the past few months wherein school authorities have had serious lapses in their duty. This isn't limited to Delhi but, across the country. The idea is to create a system of complete transparency, where wards are able to understand and also observe the process of their child's education. The idea is to create a robust but flexible system that can then serve as a model for the rest of the country.”

Teachers' salaries: DU asked central government to release the funds

Teachers' salaries: DU asked central government to release the funds

Delhi government was asked by the Delhi University to release the funds for the salaries of the teachers of 12 colleges. The government has not paid the salary of these teachers over the issue of non-formation of governing bodies. The university has sent a list of 100 other names to choose from, for the formation of the governing body. "Delhi University has sent additional names, around 100, to the Delhi government for the formation of governing bodies of colleges, which are partly or totally funded by the Delhi government. The list has been received. Also, the Delhi government has been requested to release the funds to these colleges immediately," Dean of Colleges Devesh Sinha told IANS. In total government funds 28 colleges of DU and apart from fully funding the 12 colleges, the government contributes 5 percent funds to the remaining colleges. The teachers of these 12 colleges, including Maharaja Agrasen College, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Bhagini Nivedita College and Shaheed Sukhdev College, have not received their salaries from the past two months.Due to the disagreement between the government and the university, the governing body has not been formed for one-and-a-half year."This is not a matter of rules and regulations but about who will control the university. This totally a political issue... The issue would have been resolved long back if there was a strong Vice-Chancellor at the helm. But he wants to sail in two boats. He wants to disappoint neither the Aam Aadmi Party nor the BJP at the Centre," the Academic Council member told IANS on condition of anonymity.

CBSE class XII schedule for board exams: Students are unhappy

CBSE class XII schedule for board exams: Students are unhappy

Students, parents and even the academicians are complaining about the exams schedule for class XII after seeing the date sheet prepared by the CBSE. According to the students, back-to-back exams will not leave them much time for the revisions. The toughest exam schedule turns out to be for the students for the humanities stream as they have their psychology exam on April 5, political science exam is on April 6 and legal studies exam is on April 7.Dinesh Rath, a Class XII student, said "it will be stressful to take the “lengthy” political science exam after the psychology paper. Political science is quite a vast subject… we have nearly 20 chapters. There is not even a one-day gap between the exams, which is unfair. By the time we complete the psychology paper and come back home, half the day is gone. We barely get a few hours, and that too if we don't rest at all. In my class, most students are not happy with the exam schedule… we have heard that students in other cities have written to the government, urging it to change the schedule…"Even the students from science stream are not particularly happy with their timetable as there is only one day gap between the English and Physics paper. “Physics is not just a lengthy subject but a very important one… we need at least three days to revise properly… we don't even mind if they swap the two subjects, scheduling the physics paper first and English later… But we are thankful that they didn't mess up our timetable like they did with humanities students, who have papers with no breaks,” said Sanchit Srivastva, a Class XII science student.Neelam Chakraborty, the principal of DPS School, said "it would have been better if CBSE had given breaks between the crucial papers. It's not that the students go for last-minute learning… it's more of a psychological issue… a couple of days break puts the student's mind to rest,” she said.

80 percent placement for the NIT Srinagar

80 percent placement for the NIT Srinagar

In a fashion similar to the other top engineering colleges of the nation, more than 80 percent of the students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar get placed in big companies every year and 2016 clashes between the students have no effect on this number. Director NIT, Professor Rakesh Sehgal said: "students are getting enrolled in the same number as they used to get earlier." “In NIT, students hail from different regions of the country where the situation is different from Kashmir but does not affect what is happening inside the campus. Students focus more on academics and less time is left for them to concentrate on other issues as they keep their mind busy”. Shegal told that there are 12 different departments in the NIT and every year 550 undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. students get enrolled in the institution. “For the students of J&K, there is 50 per cent home quota and this institution has more than 80 per cent placement,ʼʼ he said and added that in order to get enrolled in a big company they must check whether the student is eligible or not and if he has cleared all the seven semester exams with minimum 6.50 to 7 per cent (grade points).Director further said "Centre government has recently approved Rs 100 crores under Prime Minister Development Program for the improvement of hostel facilities, sports, and infrastructure. Under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program Rs 15 crore will be spent for the exposure of students and teaching faculties and up gradation of other facilities."

DU has a course, which has students but no syllabus

Students pursuing BA with major in Economics in DU have entered their sixth semester but have no idea about the syllabus.Under the choice based credit system (CBCS), it is mandatory for the students to study Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) in their second and third year of graduation. Courses under SEC were designed by the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) but now the department has said that it would not design the course and asked the students to another SEC from other courses. Subansh Singh Prasad, teacher-in-charge of the Department of Economics at Sri Aurobindo College, said, “Under CBCS, there is a concept of majors. For these specializations, the SEC plays a major role as it has 16 credits. In the last three semesters, the DSE created courses on Budget, Data Analysis, and Research Methodology. But there is absolutely no clarity this semester.” Prasad wrote to the Head of the Department of DSE on January 2 on the issue. “I am writing this mail to bring to your kind notice that the Skill Enhancement Paper for the students of the sixth semester, BA (Program) Economics, has not been specified… I kindly request you to look into the issue and clarify as to what is the course and course outline that has to be covered for the same.”In response, HoD Aditya Bhattacharjea replied, “There is no economics SEC for the VI semester. Teachers were told last year that they should take the initiative to design SECs as the department would not be doing it.”

CBSE to release board date sheets soon

CBSE to release board date sheets soon

In 2017, CBSE had to face huge criticism from parents and students for delaying in releasing the results of class 10 and 12 and this time there is a delay in releasing the date sheet for board exams. Earlier, the board had promised that the date sheets will be made available in the first week of January but has fallen short of its promise. The board, however, has already announced the dates for the JEE mains and NEET UG exam. It is important because last year, the board exams ended only a couple of days before the JEE mains exam and students were left with no or very little time for revision and final brush up. Students are annoyed with the apathy of the board and have taken Twitter to vent out their frustrations by making CBSE board as the object of their sarcasm. The delay in the date sheet is not a big deal as the exams are in March but it definitely prevents the students from making a clear strategy as after board exams they have to sit for JEE Mains and NEET UG exam.
