National medical commission to replace the Medical Council of India



The union cabinet gave its approval for the draft National Medical Commission Bill, 2017. The bill will replace the existing Medical Council of India (MCI) and will bring more transparency.The move is based on the recommendations made by the  Ranjit Roychowdhury Committee and a Parliamentary standing committee .According to a senior government functionary, the draft bill proposes the formation of four autonomous bodies which will be entrusted with the duties of conducting undergraduate and postgraduate education, assessment and accreditation of medical institutions and registration of practitioners under the National Medical Commission.Changes proposed by the National Medical Commission Bill, 2017 The commission will have the chairman and members nominated by the governmentThe board members will be selected by the search committee under the Cabinet SecretaryThe commission will have five elected and 12 ex-officio membersThe draft bill also proposed the introduction of common entrance exam and licentiate exam for the graduates to get the license for practicing. The official further said "the aim of the draft bill is to bring reforms in the medical education sector which has been under scrutiny for corruption and unethical practices."According to the provisions mentioned in the bill, the need of permission for adding new seats or to start a postgraduate courses will o longer be required.
