Archaeology course in Mumbai University running on scarce resources

Archaeology course in Mumbai University running on scarce resources

The first batch of the students pursuing MA in archaeology from the Mumbai University has access to hardly any resources required to study the subject.A department in archaeology was announced by the Mumbai University six months ago but there are hardly any resources in the department, which are required for proper teaching. The formation of the department was approved by the academic council and management council in May, the department is yet to be formed. Currently, the MA course is being offered by the Centre for Archaeology, which is a part of Centre for Extra Mural Studies (CEMS). The course -- MA in archaeology -- is being offered by any institute in Mumbai and it has already attracted 23 students but it running on bare minimum resources and visiting faculty instead of regular faculty. Most of the classes are being taken by the visiting faculties and in the absence of proper classrooms, students of the course have to share the classrooms with the other students of CEMS. Mugdha Karnik, the director of CEMS, said: “We were told that a department would be formed and the course would be offered by the department. However, so far, that has not happened. We have not been able to appoint teaching staff either and classes have to be scheduled as per the availability of the visiting faculties.”“When the first batch will graduate to the MA Part II course in 2018 and a fresh batch comes in, it will be very difficult to take classes,” she said.
