School fees hike: Parents can complain to FRC

School fees hike: Parents can complain to FRC

Parents of children who are studying in schools may finally have the facility to report against the fee hike which they feel is exorbitant. An 11 member committee was appointed to suggest the changes in the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Act, 2011 and it suggested that the selective representative of the parents can file their complaints in the divisional office of the Fee Regulatory Committee (DFRC).The appointed committee which was headed by the retired Bombay High Court judge VG Palshikar has submitted its report in which it made hosts of recommendations. The committee suggested that if, the host of parents from Parents Teachers Association’s executive committee feels that the fee hike is not nominal then they can approach the DFRC with a complaint. As of now there is only one parent and one teacher from each class in PTA but the committee suggested two parents to be included from each class.“The Act in its present form is toothless, particularly for parents as there is no mechanism to register complaints. The committee was formed to suggest ways of making the Act more efficient. The government will go through the report and decide what parts we may accept,” said Education Minister Vinod Tawde.Currently, the parents cannot appeal before anybody against the fee hike.
