State level university ranking framework to be set up by TN

On Friday, TN state government announced that the discussions are in progress to set up state level framework for ranking the universities. For this purpose, the institution in the state will be audited deeply and will be subject to evaluation.State Higher Education principal secretary Sunil Paliwal said "the framework aims to create and promote world-class universities. The framework is expected to come into effect from the next academic year." He further added "the state higher education minister was receptive to the idea of taking on a framework which functions along the lines of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)". At present there are 22 universities in the state. Speaking at the third National Higher Education Conclave organised by the CII in Coibatore, the principal secretary pointed that such a framework is already in place in Karnataka. He said that the state level framework will help in recognizing the deficiencies and five parameters-- research, teaching, placement, public perception and equity (to have access)-- will be the basis of the rankings.Paliwal said "the government is also seeking to improve the quality of education in the state and CII has been asked to send recommendations about the Conclave to the ministry."
