Victims of child abuse are more prone to school drop outs
According to a recent study, children who have been victims of violence are more likely to drop out of the school before graduations in relation to their peers. Girls who have experienced violence since childhood are 24 percent more likely to drop out from schools and this percentage is even higher in boys. Boys who have experienced violence are 26 percent more likely to drop out from the school. The study showed that one out of five people in the US dropped out of school which in the long run reduced their earning potential by 20 percent. The sample set for the research purpose were created from previous studies of 5,370 females and 3,522 males and to be more consistent in findings the samples were limited to US only.In the sample 34 percent of women and 29 percent of men reported being subjected to some kind violence before the age of 16 and 21 percent women reported sexual assault. "Actually, we were stunned by the magnitude of the violence directed against young women and young men," said William A Darity, professor at Duke University in the US. "Moreover, these assaults are not confined to any social class, racial, or ethnic group," Darity said. "This is authentically an American problem. One of its manifestations is the negative effect on persistence in school for many of the victims," he said. Since most states in US required compulsory education till age 16, the study focused on the relation between the dropouts and violence experienced by them between the ages of 1 to 15.
