CBSE re-test: HRD Minister heart broken and opposition demanding resignation

After CBSE announced that it would conduct the re-test of the leaked exams, the opposition is demanding the resignation/removal of the Union Human Resource Development Minister and the CBSE chief.Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said, “Without removing Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar and CBSE Chairperson Anita Karwal from their current positions, a fair and impartial investigation into this paper leak issue is impossible.”Surjewala argued that it is not the first paper leak scam under the nose of the ruling government BJP and cited other popular scams such as Vyapam and SSC CHSL paper leaks.“Three papers of CBSE have also been leaked & as per students, some more papers have also been leaked. There was an error in evaluation of Class 12 exams in 2017. Why was the post of CBSE chairman left vacant for 2 years?”When confronted by media on the issue, Javadekar said "this is an unfortunate development and being a parent, he understands the pain of the students and their parents have to go through. Whoever is involved in the paper leak will not be spared, police will soon arrest the culprits”.After the leak, CBSE announced that a re-test of the Class 10 Mathematics and Class 12 Economics papers will be done and the new dates for the exams will be announced next week.Currently, an FIR has been registered with the Delhi Police and Police is investigating the matter from all possible angles.

Punjab panel suggested dropping 'govt.' from government schools to attract more students

A Vidhan Sabha committee in Punjab suggested the idea of dropping the word 'govt.' from the government schools in order to improve their image. They further suggested renaming the schools after famous personalities such as freedom fighters, martyrs and renowned personalities. The committee consisted of 12 MLAs from Congress, SAD and AAP presented its report on Wednesday in which the suggestions were made. In the report, the committee also scrutinized the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011.According to the committee views, the level of education has fallen so low in the Government schools of Punjab that it's an insult for a family to send their children to government school for studies.“The committee, therefore, desired that the department may change the names of government schools after the names of freedom fighters and renowned personalities…,” the report states. The committee also made a bizarre suggestion which stated that persons who have studied for at-least five years before completing their 10+2 level of education in the government schools should be eligible to apply for the government jobs.

Students furious over the CBSE's decision to conduct the re-exam

Gurpreet Kaur (45), an economics teacher at Amity International School in Pushp Vihar, received a call from her students and their parents about the re-exam.“Everyone is confused about what to do next. The CBSE is penalizing the entire lot instead of punishing the culprits. Many students have enrolled for coaching for BBS, BBA, law and engineering, but that gets put on hold now,” said Kaur. She is planning to hold extra classes for the students before they appear for their test again.Disha Gopal (17), a student of Modern School, Barakhamba Road shared her frustration saying "This is CBSE's fault but we have to pay for it. After exams, we had made plans with friends and family… we had to cancel the tickets".More allegations are emerging that other board papers were also leaked.A K Jha, principal of Sarvodaya Co-Ed Vidyalaya Sector 8 Rohini, said, “It is not just these two papers which have leaked. The same thing happened with accountancy and chemistry papers; I don't know why the CBSE is not acknowledging it.”Another teacher from a private school in Rohini claimed that class XII physics exam was also leaked on the WhatsApp.“Some Humanities students showed it to me… Business studies and accountancy papers were also leaked,” the teacher claimed.

Schools guiding the parents to purchase uniforms and books

Schools guiding the parents to purchase uniforms and books

Earlier CBSE had advised the schools to not to sell books and uniforms in the commercial shops located inside the school premises. But, schools now have found a new way to do the same but in a more clever way.A private school in Chandigarh held a parents-teacher meeting before the new academic session in which hints were dropped to the parents about the shops from where they should buy books and uniforms from their children.Munish Sharda, a parent who came to buy books for his son at Manchanda bookstore, Sector 19, Chandigarh, said, “My son is in Class 6, studying in a private school in Chandigarh. Every year, we are guided by the school staff to buy books and uniform from a particular shop.”The set of books we purchase has just one or two NCERT books while the remaining books are of private publishers. The uniform too we buy from the shop prescribed the school. We have never tried buying books and uniforms from other shops,” added Sharda.Another parent, Raminder Singh, whose son is in Class 8 in a private school, said, “When the new session begins, there is a huge rush outside these bookshops and uniform shops. Maybe one shop has a tie-up with at least five-six schools.”An owner of the private school said that schools get 15-20 percent commission from the sale of one set of books and uniform.Schools now have started attaching the card of the shops with the mark-sheets of the students from where parents should buy books and uniforms.Arvind Rana, president, Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan, Teachers Welfare Association, said, “As per the CBSE guidelines, schools can only open a tuck-shop inside the school just to sell small stationery items which is sometimes immediately required by the students. But it has been found that the books are still being sold in sets from prescribed shops by the schools and there is hardly any NCERT book. Rather, the private publisher books are being sold to students which are way expensive than the NCERT books.”

CBSE denied the claims of economics paper leak

CBSE denied the claims of economics paper leak

Students of class 12 were struck by a shock when they heard the claims about the leak of the economics paper on social media. However, CBSE completely denies any slip up in the exam. The false claims of the paper being leaked were circulated on the social media and WhatApp only few hours before the commencement of the exam.CBSE denied the claims of the paper leak and urged the students and parents not to panic as this can ruin the exam.“We have checked with all examination centres and the paper was not leaked. The source of the circulation of this information is not known yet. We want to urge the students and parents to not panic and assure them that the board is doing its best to ensure sanctity of the examination,” a senior CBSE official said.A similar incident occurred on March 15 when the claims about the leak of the class 12 accountancy paper leak were spread. CBSE denied the leak, but the probe was still ordered.“There has been no leakage of the question paper. All the seals have been found intact at all exam centres. However, at local level, some miscreants may have circulated messages through WhatsApp and other social media platforms to hurt the sanctity of the exam,” the board had then said.

Analysis of class 12 economics paper

CBSE class 12 students appeared for their economics exam on March 26. Due to several changes in the pattern, students were bit anxious about the exam, but according to the experts feedbacks after the exam overall exam was of moderate level except few questions which were challenging.CBSE followed the unit wise weightage and the design of the paper was similar to the one in the sample paper and as prescribed by the CBSE in the syllabus.Shikha Bansal Economics teacher from Manav Racha International School said, “It was an easy paper and most of the questions were directly from the syllabus. There was little confusion in the MCQ portion like GST and subsidy. Also, it will be difficult to score 80 out of 80 in this paper. Overall it was a good paper”.“35/40 is achievable in each section. Hence, a score of 65 and above/80 is easily obtainable with many students being able to cross 70. The weightage of marks was almost evenly distributed with less weightage on open economy macroeconomics and money and banking as compared to the previous year's paper. Overall, the level of the paper was easy, said Rajshekhar Ratrey, VP, Educational Content, Toppr.com.Students are very happy with the way the question paper was set and many of them are expecting high marks.

6 things to keep in mind when planning to study abroad

6 things to keep in mind when planning to study abroad

Everyone would love a chance to study in an University abroad. But many times the reason to study abroad includes low marks in India, peer pressure and imitation. For others they go to study abroad so that they can settle in some distant country after the completion of the course. In all this one often forgets that study at overseas comes at a very high cost and in such a case, the investment needs to be backed up by a serious planning and clear objective. Frankly, before thinking about going abroad one needs to look at the possibility of higher education in one's own country and if it is possible then one must do it.For the students who still want to move to foreign land for better education following are the six points that they should consider: Choose the course based on your aptitude and exclusivity. Unless the university is offering vis-à- vis knowledge there is no point in going for the course. Unfortunately, for many youths the decisions are taken because of the beautiful buildings and other attractions.Go for the university which is recognized by local government authorities to accept international students. This is especially important if you are planning to study in countries like Canada, Australia and New Zealand because they offer the pathway to the work permit.Choose a course of right duration which will allow you to apply for the post qualification work permit.Choose a course which has good demand and future prospect and is also popular in one's own country.Choose a course which fits your parent's budgetChoose your overseas education consultant very carefully. Choose a consultant who has the infrastructure, offers best advice and has a trained staff.

PG management program fee raised to INR 22 lakh by IIM-A

PG management program fee raised to INR 22 lakh by IIM-A

On Saturday, the decision to raise the fee for various programs offered by the IIM-A by 5 percent was announced. With this decision, the flagship program of the institute, two-year full-time Post Graduate Program in Management, will now cost 22 lakh for the 2018-2020 batch. The announcement of increasing the fee for the various programs was made by the IIM-A director Errol D'Souza. He said, “Like every year, there will be a rise in fee. But it's only in line with the inflation. We are only raising it by 5 per cent. PGP program will now be Rs 22 lakh. The fee for PGPX (Post Graduate Program for Executives) will also be in the same line.”Last year, the institute raised the fee for the program which then went up from Rs 19.5 lakh to Rs 21 lakh. The cost of management program for the 2017-19 batch was Rs 21 lakh in addition to the laptop, personal expenses on boarding, travel, clothes and other services.Regarding the IIM Act, D'Souza said, “We are waiting for the government to formulate the rules and once they formulate the rules we are ready with our regulations. Then we will have a board meeting where we will move into the system defined by the Act.”However, he was still not sure whether the institute will give degrees in place of diplomas next year. He said, “I can't say that. Once the regulation is in place, only then we can decide.”

Over 88 percent of the Journals are sub-standard: UGC's study

A study of the list of the journals approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) found that over 88 percent of them (recommended by the Universities) are sub-standard. The study -- Critical analysis of UGC-approved list of journals -- was headed by a Pune-based researcher, Dr Bhushan Patwardhan, #professor at the Inter-disciplinary School of Health Sciences, Pune University. The study found out that at least 349 or 34.5 percent of the journals carried inaccurate or non-availability of essential information such as address, website details and names of editors and were disqualified. As many as 528 journals or 52.3 percent journals, had false information or their editors had poor credentials. In the study only 112 journals managed to score a score of 6 or above while the remaining .9 percent of journals did not satisfy the minimal requirements, the study found.Dr Patwardhan, the main author of the study, said "widespread ‘publish or perish’ policies have given rise to a breed of predatory journals, whose main objective is to make money by publishing ‘anything’ in the name of a research paper for a ‘fee’, commonly known as an “article/author processing charge".The UGC has also admitted that it had received various complaints about the journals being sub-standard soon after the releasing the approved list of journals on June 2 last year. “This was our independent research. We have developed a protocol with objective criteria to identify journals that do not follow good publication practices,” said Patwardhan.

Indian railways may get online FIR registration system

Indian railways may get online FIR registration system

In an attempt to develop an online registration system for the First Information Report (FIR) for the Indian Railways, various groups of young students will compete against each other in Smart Indian Hackathon 2018, which will be conducted in Udaipur on March 30 and 31.For the competition, around 296 participants have been selected through countrywide screening process. The main problem with the reported FIR is that when the crime is committed in railway premises it usually takes some time to sort out the jurisdiction especially when the crime takes place on a moving train. So, the challenge for the students is to develop a solution which takes into account all the variable data and serves a solution to the problem.Another problem which the passengers face is a regarding hearing the announcements on the railway platforms. Many passengers miss the announcements due to ambient noise. For this, Indian Railway is looking for a solution which can send the notifications on the passenger's electronic device in real time.

Analysis of CBSE class 12 Computer Science Exam

Yesterday, students of class 12 studying in schools affiliated to the CBSE appeared for their Computer Science Exam. The exam was well balanced but students found the language of the questions tricky. Some questions in the exams tested the students on their analytical thinking and therefore required longer time to solve them. Students said that the exam was not lengthy as they had practiced most of the questions in their pre-board exams. All the questions were from the syllabus and students are expecting 90 percent in the exam.Students were tricked by the language of the questions but those who understood the language were able to solve the questions. The paper was designed for all the students, which makes it a balanced paper. There were few errors in the exam and students were informed about them in the examination hall.

However, internal choice was there in few questions. Nothing was out of syllabus. An average student can score above 70 per cent in a paper like this,” he said. Some students found the questions on map were tricky and others felt that the questions were straight forward and easy, however the overall exam was a bit lengthy. As per Rajshekhar Ratrey, Toppr.com the paper was easy. “It was easy just like last year, although, marks’ weightage wasn’t similar as compared to that of last year. Overall, the level of the paper was easy; history map was slightly difficult for some students,” he said.

Vacant seats in new Engineering college: UP government to not open the college

The possibility of opening new engineering colleges has been ruled out by the Uttar Pradesh government as more than 62 percent seats in the existing technical colleges are lying vacant."Sixty-two per cent seats in engineering colleges are vacant and government is not going to open any new engineering college in the state," Technical Education Minister Ashutosh Tondon said during Question Hour in the Assembly.Replying to Samajwadi Party member Sanjay Garg's question on why such a large number of seats were vacant, Tondon said: "It happened because the previous government did not pay attention to infrastructure facilities and allowed opening of engineering colleges though they were not needed. We are ensuring that quality of education is maintained. No new teachers were appointed in government engineering colleges after 2007. We have sanctioned Rs. 200 crore for developing infrastructural facilities in government engineering colleges," he said.He further said that to prevent the name of the teacher from being used in multiple colleges, the government is linking the teachers' database with the Aadhaar Card and to prevent the misuse of the funds for the scholarships, scholarships are also being linked with the Aadhaar cards."Institutions flouting AICTE norms will be probed," he added.

Maharashtra Education Minister suggested to black list the exam centers involved in paper leaks

Maharashtra Education Minister suggested to black list the exam centers involved in paper leaks

Vinod Tawde, Maharashtra Education minister, suggested the idea of blacklisting the centers which are found guilty of leaking the papers. He was addressing the issue of frequent paper leaks of SSC and HSC exams. The matter was raised by the Congress' Sanjay Dutt."The government has taken serious note of such leaks and tough deterrent action will be taken against those involved. Guilty examination centers will be blacklisted and permanently barred from the examination center lists," Vinod Tawde said.Speaking about the leak of the class X History and Political Science exam Sanjay Dutt said that evidence suggest that the leak might have happened due to the involvement of the teachers of the coaching classes. He further said that the investigation is indicating the signs of the syndicate racket in which members of the schools board may be involved."It indicates a racket in which board employees may be involved as this is not an isolated incident but one in a series of leaks. It began with the Chemistry paper on February 28, English paper on March 8 followed by Science paper on March 16," Sanjay Dutt said.He further said that the incidents of frequent paper leaks are forcing the people to question the working of the Education department and the board.Vinod Tawde said that a meeting of experts is being scheduled and final decision to tackle the problem will be taken before the end of the ongoing budget session.

HRD Ministry: States to decide whether to reduce the NCERT syllabus or not

On the matter of reducing the NCERT syllabus, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry said that final decision is in the hands of the state. They can 'adapt or adopt' the plan to reduce the curriculum as prescribed by NCERT.“Education being a subject in the concurrent list of the Constitution and substantial majority of schools being under the jurisdiction of the state governments, it is for the respective states to either adopt or adapt the model curriculum, syllabi and textbooks developed by the NCERT,” said Minster of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha. The HRD ministry is also seeking the suggestions from the various stakeholders on which portions of the NCERT syllabus can be done away with so that the burden on the students can be reduced.Union Minister Praksah Javadekar had recently said "the school syllabus is more than that of BA and B Com courses, and it needed to be reduced by half so that students get time for other activities for their all- round development. This will be done in the next two to three years and the curriculum would be revamped to include physical education, value education and life skills education."
