Clash between schools and government; students denied admission under RTE

As the clash between the schools and government regarding the pending reimbursements is heating, it is the students who are seeking the admissions under RTE quota are taking all the heat.Under RTE, many private schools are denying the admission to the students of the EWS category but the education department is still to acknowledge this fact.School managements, on the other hand, are openly admitting the fact that they are turning away the admissions under the RTE category.Admission figures on the RTE website says that while 10,228 students were given allotments under the first draw of the RTE only 236 admissions have been confirmed so far.Parents of the students from EWS category said that school managements have denied them the admission by citing several excuses.Shashikant Gaikwad, whose daughter has been given an allotment in Class I at a private international school in Wagholi, said, “When I visited the school, they asked me to come back after 4-5 days. They said they have not been given any reimbursement from the government for the admissions they granted in previous years….this year, they have not been giving admissions. They said some court case was going on and the situation would be clear in four to five days, after which I should check with them again. But the last date to confirm the admission is March 24….".Another parent said that his daughter was allotted a seat in a school in Kharadi. However, the school management turned him down saying that the RTE admissions queries are entertained only on Mondays and Fridays.“They were also saying something about a case… I am hopeful that on Friday, they will confirm my admission. I have visited the school twice since I received the allotment message,” he said. This year, many private school managements have approached the Bombay High Court alleging that the government has failed to reimburse them for the RTE admissions done last year.
