Numbers of vacant seats are increasing at IITs
Since 2013, seats in the nation's most reputable technological colleges are going vacant and according to the data compiled by the HRD Ministry, this number is highest for the IIT-BHU.The numbers of vacant seats are in continual rise since 2013. Seeing the rising trend, the HRD ministry has set up a panel to make several recommendations to address the issue.According to the data, of the total 11,000 seats in across the IITs, a total of 274 seats have remained vacant from 2013 to present which include 15 (in 2013), five in 2014, 39 in 2015, 96 in 2016 and 121 in 2017.Among all other IITs, IIT-BHU has recorded the maximum numbers of vacant seats. There were 32 vacancies in 2017, 38 in 2016, 28 in 2015, three in 2014 and four seats in 2013.IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Hyderabad had all their seats claimed between 2013 and 2017 while IIT-Delhi had zero vacancies between 2013 and 2015.“In order to minimize the vacancies in IITs, NITs and other Centrally- Funded Technical institutions (CFTIs), the HRD ministry constituted a committee to recommend suitable measures,” a senior ministry official said.“Some disciplines may be considered for closure or be kept in abeyance for a few years, if needed. New courses and disciplines may be introduced only after carrying out market opportunity analysis,” he added.
