IIT's decision on grace marks challenged in Supreme Court

IIT's decision on grace marks challenged in Supreme Court

A petition was filed today in the apex court challenging the decision of the IITs to grant grace marks to all students for the misprinted questions in the JEE exam on which the apex court has sought the reply from the center and the IIT Madras (exam conducting body) on why grace marks were awarded to all the candidates (this include candidates who did not even attempt the question). Earlier, IITs have given the additional 11 grace marks to all the students for three ambiguous questions asked in the JEE Advanced exam held on May 21. Two of the three ambiguous questions were from the math section and one was from the physics section. In two other questions from physics and chemistry, marks will be given to the candidates who have answered any of the two options given by the IITs as the answer.According to the reports from TOI, students, in 2016, got bonus marks in three questions and in 2015 they got bonus marks in only one ambiguous question. The seat allotment process in the IITs NITs and other GFTIs has already started this week and more than 36000 students were allotted seats in the first round across 97 institutes and 11000 candidates were offered seats in IITs.

CBSE: Moderation policy to remain in play if other boards do not agree

CBSE: Moderation policy to remain in play if other boards do not agree

Taking into account the agreement over moderation policy among other boards, Central Board of Secondary Education is in doubtful state regarding the scrapping off the moderation policy. The board said that it will not scrap-off the policy if other boards will not agree to the same. “We are completely in favour of scrapping inflation of marks in order to maintain pass parity with previous years' results,” said a senior CBSE official. He further said that "this may put student of the central Board at a disadvantage as compared to students of the state boards".Earlier, in a meeting on April 24, a consensus was developed among the CBSE and state boards but the Delhi High Court prohibited the CBSE from scrapping the moderation policy in the mid-evaluation. The board had plans for the challenging the HC decision but fearing the delay of the results it did not do so.To prevent the inflation of the marks the board has also set up Inter Board Working Group (IBWG) panel asking the state boards not to inflate the marks of the students for class 12 CBSE exams 2018.Two more committees have also been set up by the board in order to study the evaluation process and find out the loopholes which caused huge faults in the evaluation of marks of the students of class 12.

More than 20 lakh students dropped their schooling during Akhilesh Yadav regime

More than 20 lakh students dropped their schooling during Akhilesh Yadav regime

Under the leadership of UP's previous chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, more than 20 lakh students dropped out of schools. This statement came from the state's Basic Education Minister Anupam Jaiswal. The present government is working day and night and is doing its best to decrease the number of drop out students from the schools. "I believe that the problem is in front of us and I don’t deny it either. This time we have created an efficient strategy for the School Chalo campaign, it will not be just a formality like the previous government,” she said. “I will be monitoring this campaign myself, we will also be asking state ministers and representatives to participate as well,” she added.Jaiswal further told the media that current chief minister of the state, Yogi Adityanath, will also be involved in the campaign and will go wherever his presence will be required.“All the officers and employees of Basic Education Department will also be involved in this campaign. There will also be a door-to-door campaign to spread awareness, we have also done a household survey done as well to gauge the scale of the problem,” she said. When asked about the heavy dropout rate of the children she said “The main reason behind children dropping out of school is poverty. We have tried to counsel the parents of the kids and now many kids are back to school. We are providing food, copybooks, and uniforms to the children who come to school, but still if they are dropping out then there is some laxity in our approach and I admit it. But then we have been in power for just 100 days, and we are continuously trying to minimize the figures of school drop outs in the state”.Right now, the state government is all set to start two new campaign namely, '‘Khoob Padho, Aage Badho' and 'School Chalo Abhiyan' to increase the number of enrollments in the schools.

State will soon regulate private play schools

State will soon regulate private play schools

Registration of the private schools will now be mandatory as government is planning to bring such school under the lens in order to keep and an eye on the teaching methods which are being practiced in these schools to impart education to the children. This decision was taken in a meeting which was chaired by state women and child development minister Anita Bhadel. Officials from other departments, which are accountable for the childhood learning in anganwadi centers and private schools, were also present in the meeting. “Currently, play schools are running across the state in abundance and there is no provision to control, regulate and register these for quality education and early childhood care education (ECCE). Hence, a committee under the chairmanship of ICDS director is being directed to draft regulations and guideline for education in private play schools after examining the same in other states. The committee will give its report along with recommendations in one month,” said Bhadel in the meeting. The main aim of the decision is to keep an eye on the teaching methods of the private schools and to set standard parameters to impart education to the children. The minister also told that department has decided to run a campaign 'Anganwadi Chalo' in order to attract toddlers and their parents to government run centers.“There is a good response to anganwadi centres and enrolment of children has increased in a good ratio. To add more students, the campaign has been launched. Under it, the department will run awareness campaign and publicise functioning of the centre through audio, video messages at public spots. In the meeting it was also decided to renovate old and dilapidated centres by taking support from Panchayati Raj department,” the minister asserted.

Moderation policy to be revised by the CBSE for 2018 board exams

Moderation policy to be revised by the CBSE for 2018 board exams

After a long debate, the CBSE is finally planning to do away with the tradition of giving grace marks to the students in class 12 board exams from the next academic session. According to the report from Times now, the board is planning to dispose-off its moderation policy which is the main reason for the soaring marks in class 12. Earlier, on April 25 CBSE announced that it will no longer continue its moderation policy by the means of notification but in a reply to plea filed by the students, Delhi High Court instructed the board to continue its grace marks policy, for this year.Statement form the board official According to the report by Times Now, a senior board official said "they want to ensure true marks of students are reflected in the board examination and to maintain the pass party, marks of students are moderated. This is unfair to those who work hard as moderation is not applicable if a student gets 95 marks or above". Statement from Prakash JavadekarWhile commenting on the grace marks policy, the Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on June 24 said that "generous marks distribution of marks will soon stop. I will stop bad practices in the field of education". "Students have to work hard to earn marks. It isn't possible that everybody scores 100 out of 100 in all subjects. There should be some restrictions while awarding marks,"Javadekar added. Also, there are speculations that from 2018 there will be a single paper for all students throughout India which was earlier followed by three different sets of papers as this will eliminate the need of moderation policy.

Want to study MBBS in Kerala's private college? Pay more than 500000

Want to study MBBS in Kerala's private college? Pay more than 500000

CBSE declared the result for NEET 2017 exam on June 23 and according to the reports more than 6 lakh candidates cleared the exam this year.Soon after the declaration of the results, the fees for the MBBS course at private medical colleges was fixed at Rs 5.5 lakh. The fee was fixed by the government appointed committee and will come into effect from this academic session, 2017-18. "The above fixed fee is provisional and applicable to all self-financing medical colleges, including deemed universities, subject to the regulation by the Committee, as per law," the committee said in recent PTI report. Referring to NRI quota, the committee said that the seats for the NRI quota are 15 percent of total seats and fee for them have been fixed to Rs 20 lakh. Some colleges disagreed and said that the fee be set at Rs 15 lakh on which the government said that fee of 15 lakh seems to be too " exorbitant, exploitative and profiteering". An order was also passed regarding the same which said "If there will be any difference in the fee structure after the final fee regulation, appropriate orders would be issued later".The provisional fee was decided by the committee after studying previous agreements and the income collected by the medical colleges as fees.Supreme Court has also order to close the admission process by September.Opposition leader in the Assembly, Ramesh Chennithala criticized the new fee structure and said "students belonging to BPL (below poverty line) category also had to pay the same fee as those by financially sound students. With the new fees structure, the LDF government had destroyed the "social security" existing in the self- financing sector in medical education".

Textbooks in schools should not be ideological battle ground: Sisodia writes to Javadekar

Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, in a letter to Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar said that the textbooks in schools should not be used as a tool to fight ideological battle and score points in politics instead they must be designed to suit the needs of the children. "Successive governments have used education as an ideological battlefield that is used to force certain narratives on children. Education must not be a platform for such political point scoring. DU school of journalism not to be self-financed

DU school of journalism not to be self-financed

The Delhi school of Journalism is now about to become a reality as a major throne in the way of the school was plucked by the Academic Council when the council made it clear that the institution will not be self-financed. This decision was taken in a meeting which was held on June 22 and continued till 7:30am till next morning. During the meeting, AC decided that the school will not be self-financed otherwise the students will be burned by the high fees which might be required by the institute to fund its activities, academic and otherwise. "The council decided that the school will not work under a self-financing model. We have also agreed to send the proposal of the school to UGC (University Grants Commission) to convince it to fund its operations. We opposed self-financing model because it would have ultimately led to privatization," Samrendra Kumar, Assistant Professor at Shyam Lal College and a Academic Council member, told IANS. "The clause of self-financing from the preamble of the institute has been removed. We have been against this kind of structure from the beginning. The Vice Chancellor has also agreed to write to UGC to get it proper status as fully-funded institute," he said. The fee structure of the institute will be prepared by a separate committee appointed by the AC.The journalism course will be a five year integrated course and after the completion of the course, the candidates will receive Master's degree. However, there is a provision under which students can pull themselves out of the course in three years and will be given bachelor's degree for the same course.

CBSE to consult stakeholders before advancing the exams in 2018

Recently, CBESE told that it is planning to conduct the board exams from the month of February instead of March from 2018. CBSE told that moving the schedule one month ahead will give more time for evaluation and will prevent the mistakes which happened in this year's class 12 board exams. Before finalizing the decision, CBSE said that it will not make a move in this direction without consulting its various stakeholders including the affiliated schools. After the announcement of moving the exam schedule a month ahead, many schools raised their concerns over the decision of the CBSE. “The purpose is to have more time for evaluation and bring quality. However, there will be no decision on the advancing the exams without taking stakeholders on board,” a senior CBSE official said. The board is planning to move the exams of class 10 and 12 in the month of February.Last week, CBSE had a meeting with the HRD ministry where they discussed about the discrepancies in the marks achieved by the class 12 students and the marks reflected in the mark sheets. School Education Secretary Anil Swarup and CBSE chairman R K Chaturvedi attended the meeting.

Teacher crisis in Tripura is becoming Hot

Teacher crisis in Tripura is becoming Hot

Left front Government of Tripura is facing acute shortage of teachers which it needs to run its 5000 schools from the next academic year beginning next January. The situation become worse when the apex court on march 29 upholding the decision of the state High Court terminated the jobs of 10,323 government teachers. Not only this but also, the state is also facing an acute shortage of the eligible candidates who can fill up the 15436 vacant posts of the teachers. For this the Tripura Government has appealed the center to provide some relaxations in the norms for recruiting the teachers so that it can fill the vacant posts and ahead of Assembly elections the matter is getting turned into political matter. "We had sought one time relaxation in qualifying marks and exemption of professional qualification with the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) for recruiting teachers, but the ministry rejected our request," Tripura Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty told IANS.Chakraborty also told that he met the Union Minister Prakash Javadekar in the related matter last month and wrote several letters to him on the same issue. "Our senior officials met the ministry officials in Delhi many times on the issue, but the central government disallowed our appeal. This has deprived thousands of unemployed youths in the state an opportunity (to take up teachers' posts)," he added. The Minister further said that the HRD Ministry in April relaxed the minimum qualification norms for the states of Assam and West Bengal for recruiting teachers. He wants Tripura to be given the same relaxation in the norms related to the recruitment of the teachers.Chakraborty said "Tripura has only six teaching education institutes. The intake capacity of the six institutions is only 1,130 for a two-year teacher's course. Hence to fill up the vacancies of 15,436 teachers posts with qualified teachers will take a few decades." Under Right to Education (RTE) Act, Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) is mandatory for recruiting the teachers in government schools. To appear for TET candidates need to have minimum 50 percent in certain subjects and Bachelor degree or Diploma in Elementary Education or Diploma in Education."Like other states in India, the pass percentage of candidates in TET is very minimal in Tripura too. This makes the situation worse," Chakraborty added.

Through proper Education Muslim Women in India can be the agents of change

Through proper Education Muslim Women in India can be the agents of change

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on the education and empowerment of the Muslim women. Instead of receiving widespread applaud, acceptance and support the move was met with the resistance. There were varieties of reasons that the move was met with the resistance. Some people saw it as a mere political stunt by the Modi. Others questioned whether Modi is really doing anything meaningful and concrete in the area of education and women empowerment and remaining were against it because of the controversy over the triple-talaq.For India to achieve its full potential there is a critical need to empower the Muslim women in India thorough education. The status of the education as captured by the census in 2001 reveals that literacy rate in Muslim women is only 59 percent.According to the Sachar Committee Report of 2006, Muslims and other weaker section of the society are facing development deficit in number of areas. The report by the Sachar Committee,  lead to the development of the across-the-board program for the welfare and development of the minority communities. The program had a substantial effect on the development as the literacy rate for the Muslims in 2011 census went up to 68.5 percent against the national literacy rate of 74 percent. The news is good but the numbers within numbers tell another story. Among women the worst literacy rate is among the Muslim women which is less than 52 percent and this is the cause of main concern and must change. Women from Muslim community should be able to participate in the full continuum of the education.Education in itself is empowering especially, for Muslim women as it removes the veil of ignorance and develops the knowledge, skills and attitude to create one's own destiny. It builds self-esteem and builds a bridge to a happy future.

Improve Education Sector: Uttarakhand High Court asked the state

Uttarakhand High Court summoned the top officials of the government and asked them to explain the financial crisis which is preventing them from improving the education sector. The officials were called a day after the High Court banned the purchase of the luxury items by the state until the schools in the states are equipped with the basic amenities.Principal secretaries in the finance and education department were summoned by the court and after acknowledging the fact that the implementation of the all facilities will be a financial burden on the state's finances, the court ordered them to provide the basic amenities for the moment. The major importance was given to providing the clean drinking water which is very important as water borne diseases such as jaundice are already prevalent in the area. The court said that a sum of Rs 100 crore will be more than enough to provide basic facilities as a first step.Advocate General SN Babulkar said that he will pursue the matter at the higher level. The court further said that "the appropriate amount be set aside for the education sector".The court stated that "given the summer season the government can buy items like water coolers and other necessities subject to clearance from the Principal Secretary concerned".

CBSE NEET 2017 exam result: Out of 8 5 transgender candidates cleared the exam

CBSE NEET 2017 exam result: Out of 8 5 transgender candidates cleared the exam

CBSE declared the result for the NEET 2017 exam on June 23 and out of eight transgender candidates who appeared in the exam five successfully qualified the exam. A senior official from CBSE told Press Trust of India that this year eight transgender had applied for the exam and five successfully qualified it. CBSE declared the results for the NEET 2017 exam after the apex court paved the way for the same by over-ruling the Madras High Court's order. In  last year's NEET 1 and NEET 2, 3 transgender candidates out of registered 8 cleared the exam.In the landmark judgment passed by the apex court in April 2014, it created a third gender status for the transgender community. Justice KS Radhakrishnan and AK Sikri granted legal recognition to the transgender as 'third gender' and directed the stat government to treat them as socially and educationally backward classes and provide them reservation in admissions to educational institutes and in jobs. Before this transgender candidates were forced to write male or female against their gender options on application forms.More than 10 lakh students appeared for the NEET 2017 exam out of which 611539 cleared the exam successfully which was conducted by the CBSE on May 7.
