Paper analysis: UPSC civil services prelims 2017

Paper analysis: UPSC civil services prelims 2017

UPSC successfully conducted the Civil Services preliminary examination. In the past few years UPSC has shifted its focus more on the factual knowledge instead of conceptual and had been giving more emphasis on the current affairs rather than the static portion of the prelim exam. But, this year UPSC again renewed its focus on the conceptual and applied questions. The questions were framed cleverly as they did not only test candidate's knowledge in many dimensions but also made candidates to cull out the relevant information. Atul Roy of Gradeup said "the paper was significantly more difficult than last year and that is going to affect the cut-off too". This year UPSC threw many surprises in the paper and candidates who were expecting a set pattern found themselves in shock after seeing the paper. At first glance paper seemed too easy to attempt but options in some questions were very close and in some questions very specific details were asked. This paper was also a setback for those candidates who have mugged up all the current affairs because very few questions were asked on current affairs. The UPSC prelim 2017 exam re-established the fact that clearing UPSC prelim not only requires extensive reading but also an eye for the details. Section of General Science also received a cold shoulder from UPSC this year like the current affairs section.
