Carry-forward system scrapped by the Gujarat University
In a significant move to attempt to improve the education standard in the country, Gujarat government has decided to do away with the 'carry-forward-system' and now students will have to clear all the exams before they can be promoted to the next semester. The decision was taken during the meeting between the executive and academic council of the university on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor Himanshu Pandya said that "students, getting admissions from 2017-18 academic session, will now have to clear all their semester papers for getting promoted to the next semester". According to the reports, the carry-forward system puts huge burden on the university for conducting the exams and also results in poor pass percentage. According to the teachers, students also do not take their exams seriously as they know that they will be promoted to next semester. Many students clear their first and second semester exams during their fourth and fifth semester which affects teaching as well.During the meeting, the University also decided to start several new courses like post-graduate diploma in pharmaceutical sciences, M.Sc in horticulture science and garden management, PG diploma in forensic accounting and PG diploma in business analysis among others.
