Innovations of three Indian students selected for the James Dyson award's final round

Three contestants from India have been selected for the final round of James Dyson award. The winner of the award will receive a cash reward of £30,000. The projects for the final round have been selected from 1000 entries from 23 different countries. From India projects - Maattam, Eco-friendly Faucet and Saviour- are in the race of finals. James Dyson Award made debut in India this year.Mattam: Mattam is invented by a student of IIT Kanpur, Ashish Mohandas. It is a patient transfer system which helps in transferring the patient from one bed to another on a conveyor belt like mechanism. It can be attached to any wheeled stretcher and can transfer patients to/from beds. Savior: Savior is a motorcycle helmet which is designed by three students of IIT-BHU namely Naman Singhal, Rishabh Babeley, Jagjeet Shyamkunwar, Vikram Kumar Jha.It has two modules- one is designed into the helmet and other module is fitted on the motorcycle. By putting on the strap of the helmet, the sensor inside the helmet detects the presence of the human and turn on the helmet which in turn sends a wireless signal to the motorcycle to turn on. Accident is detected with the help of accelerometer and crash censor and sends the information to the nearby emergency services.Eco-friendly Faucet: It is designed by the Sandesh Manik of the Manipal Institute of Technology and this invention aims to save the water. In conventional faucet, most of the water just flows down the drain without touching the surface to be cleaned. Bias in student selection in Urdu department: Alleged DU professor

An associate professor of DU is seeking permission to file an FIR against the Urdu department for the alleged irregularities in the PhD admission. For this he has also written a letter to the vice chancellor.According to the professor, the committee which decides on admission tweaked the list, removed the signature of the professor along with the name of the deserving candidates. The professor is also a member of the committee.Khalid Alvi is an associate professor at the Zakir Hussain College (morning). On Thursday, he sent an e-mail to the vice chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi, informing about the same and followed it up on Friday with the letter. “Sir, with due respect I have to state that the Urdu Department has arbitrarily and fraudulently changed the list of successful candidates for PhD course. As a member of DRC (Department Research Committee), I signed the list of selected candidates, but the declared list doesn't bear my signature. Even the name of a selected candidate, who happens to be topper of BA, MA, BEd and Entrance Test, was dropped. Kindly set up a high-level enquiry or allow me to file an FIR,” he said in the letter. Speaking to IE Alvi said that the interviews of the candidates were held on August 30 and the final list was decided. "I had signed the list. But when the department released the list on September 5, it did not bear my signature. Moreover, a brilliant DU student's name was removed," alleged Alvi.Tyagi was not available for answers on the matter.

DU to admit 301 more students in LLB course on directions of Delhi HC

DU to admit 301 more students in LLB course on directions of Delhi HC

In addition to current 2310 existing students, Delhi HC has directed the DU and faculty of law to admit additional 301 'supernumerary candidates' under the Persons with Disabilities (PWD), Children and Widows of Armed Forces (CW) and Foreign Nationals (FN) categories. The court has passed an interim order on June 28 under which it allowed the DU to admit 2310 students for the current academic session but some students move to court and told that the DU and Law faculty erroneously included the supernumerary seats in 2310 seats. “It is submitted that DU was required to admit 301 candidates in the reserved categories as supernumeraries over and above 2,310 seats,” a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said. According to the bench DU submitted that it has been admitting 2310 students in Law Faculty for LLB course since May 2008. “It appears that this submission is incomplete… as the undisputed factual position placed before us is that since 2008 till 2015-16, DU was admitting 2,310 students as well as additional supernumerary candidates for the PWD/CW/FN categories,” it said.

The Importance of Good Soft Skills

The Importance of Good Soft Skills

The world is an ever changing place. Gone are the days when we used a circular dial on our telephone to ring and call someone. Gone are the days when our TVs could do not much else but provide us with a channel to watch. Gone are the days when we used postcards to tell our friends and families where we were, who we were with and what we were doing. Gone are the days when we would only be able to merely wonder about what is going on in the world around us. This was the life I lived 30 years ago when I was a teenager. This is not the life I live now. 1987 has long gone. Welcome...

Safeguards needs to be in place for the education loan scheme: L-G to Manish Sisodia

Safeguards needs to be in place for the education loan scheme: L-G to Manish Sisodia

Earlier, Manish Sisodia charged the L-G of Delhi as partial to the children of Delhi over the matter of blocking the government's education loan scheme for higher education to which L-G replied and said that his action of blocking the scheme was misconstrued and said "loans had to be need-based, generally available, and with safeguards".In a letter to Sisodia on Wednesday, Balaji wrote that higher education is no longer a luxury but essential and that any students' loan scheme must meet two criteria of being need based and generally available. A statement from the L-Gʼs office added, “The challenges of non-availability of loans, high default rate, need for proper due diligence by banks, non-participation of the educational institutions, equity of access, improper data collection, tracking of students, etc, also need to be addressed.” The L-G has “only suggested that it might be a good idea to advise the administrative department to ensure that all the safeguards incorporated… may be considered…,” the statement added.Sisodia, on the concerns raised by the L-G said that the scheme already has all the safeguards in place. “Appreciate his concern for safeguards. But all safeguards are already built into Edu-Loan Scheme. Shall be highlighting and sending file back to honourable L-G,” said Sisodia.

Delhi Cabinet to regularize 15000 guest teachers

On Wednesday, Delhi government regularized 15000 teachers which were working in its schools as guest teachers. A bill regarding the same will be presented in the assembly next week.“Approximately 15,000 guest teachers are teaching in the schools of the Directorate of Education (DoE) and have played a crucial role in some of the flagship programmes including Summer Camps, Chunauti, and Reading Campaign,” Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said after the Cabinet meeting. “The Cabinet approved regularization of these teachers and a draft Legislative proposal has been formulated, which will be brought in the ensuing Delhi Vidhan Sabha Session to be convened on October 4 for approval,” he added. Sisodia, who is also an education minister of Delhi said, Delhi government's education process was highly reformed by the skills and contributions of the guest teachers. “If the guest teachers who are currently teaching in our schools were to be replaced with fresh candidates, DoE would suffer quite a setback to our education reform process and we would need to re-start the process from scratch,” he said. “Apart from the training programs that we have invested in, guest teachers have, over the years, acquired skills and competencies essential to working in government schools and if we lose their services the benefit of their experience will also be lost,” he added.

I am an example,” he said.Vaishya said that he wanted to send the youth a message that defeat should never be accepted. “I want to tell them not to get upset and depressed. ‘Mauka aur avsar har wakt rehta hai, kewal khud pe vishwas hona chahiyeʼ (There will always be opportunities for those who believe in themselves),” he said. He admitted that following the routine of a students was not easy in his age and said "It was really difficult for me to wake up early to prepare for the exams."Officials from NOU said "Vaishya was so determined to get a postgraduate degree that he sat for a three-hour MA first year examination in 2016 and the final year exam in 2017 along with students younger than his grandchildren. He wrote in English and used nearly two dozen sheets in each exam."“The idea was not to get a degree but to study economics. There are many PhD students who have the superfluous knowledge,” he said. In Delhi more than 90 schools deposited 75 percent excess fees

Over 90 schools in Delhi claimed in the Delhi HC that as per the orders of the court they have refunded the 75 percent excess fees charged by them.Another 20 schools said that they will do the same within a period of two days to two weeks. The recommendation of refunding the extra fees to the students was made by the Justice Anil Dev Singh Committee, which was set up by the HC. It is said that the schools which have deposited the excessive fees within the time frame stated by the court will be protected from any coercive actions only after their claims have been verified by the Directorate of Education (DoE). The bench has asked the DoE to verify the claims of the deposits made by the school and inform the court on October 27, the next date of the hearing. On September 6, the court directed the private schools, which failed to refund the excess fee charged by them, to deposit 75 percent of the principal amount within the 14 days to avoid any coercive action. The court had directed the schools to deposit the amount in the form of "cash, fix deposits receipts or bank guarantees favouring the Registrar General" in the High Court Registry.

Course on 'Chetan Bhagat's novels' and 'writing on FB' meets dead end

Chetan Bhagat's novels are one of the best sellers in the Indian market but, some colleges of DU opposed the idea of including his novels in the literature curriculum of the university as a result the proposal to add Chetan Bhagat's novels in the literature curriculum and the a course on writing the posts on FB has hit a roadblock.Several teachers and colleges of the university opposed the idea. Seeing the opposition from the colleges, teachers and students, for now, the university has decided to put the proposal on hold. To make any concrete decision regarding these two courses, the university has formed a committee to recommend if these courses can be taken up in the next academic session. The proposal was proposed by the Delhi University's English department."It was felt that there is arbitrariness in framing and modification of the syllabus. It has also come to light that the department has been in practice of favoring some authors and publishers, even by going out of the way of normal practice and justification, it seems through the reactions which came after the proposal that all of a sudden one big change has been made in the undergraduate English course by introducing Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone in the popular fiction paper of the syllabus," read the minutes of meeting in which the panel was formed.

Unable to supply in person, PSEB is now providing the books online for the govt. schools' students

PSEB has now put several books online for download as it failed to provide the books in person to the students of the govt. schools across the state. The move has raised a new question as teachers said that most of the students come from poor background and have no access to the computers so, how these students are supposed to download the books from internet.Nearly 30 of the students are waiting for the books in the government schools and majority of them only received the books few weeks earlier. “Most children in our government schools come from the poor background and for many the main attraction is midday meal because their families cannot even feed them two meal a day. In such a condition, how do board officials think that ‘onlineʼ books can benefit these poor students,” said a school teacher from a government high school in Jalandhar. The teacher further added "I myself got one such book printed just to teach the students which cost me around Rs 200 and how we can we expect that these students can afford to get the print out of these."“There are 350 different schools books and to download every book and distribute them to every student is not possible. Moreover children do not take any interest in photocopied books,” said an English teacher. In some schools half yearly exams are already on the head and students in these schools are without any books. “How we can improve the results of the students when they do not have books for half of the year,” said another teacher.Despite making several attempts to get in touch with the Punjab Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary, she did not pick her phone.

SC directed MCI to admit the duo with colorblindness in MBBS

The go-ahead for the admission of the two students suffering from colorblindness a.k.a. Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) was given by the SC and now these students will be admitted in a MBBS course in Tripura. However, MCI had expressed its concerns about admitting the students suffering from CVD into MBBS course.A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar gave the decision in the favor of the students. The decision was given after a great deal of discussion between the expert committee appointed by the court. The committee discussed about various aspects of admitting these students into the MBBS course and suggested admitting them. The committee submitted a report which drew a line between colorblindness and CVD. The report concluded "in this context, color blindness has been dealt with adequately as an impediment, but Color Vision Deficiency does to have any embargo of any type whatsoever". After this the court directed that Pranay Kumar Podder and another person be admitted in the MBBS course in 2018-19 academic year. The MCI also supported the decision of the committee and court and said "person suffering from CVD shall be permitted…to undertake the examination and be admitted to MBBS course".Both the candidates were disqualified during the 2015 counseling as they were suffering from partial colorblindness. After this, both the candidates moved to the Tripura High Court where MCI pointed that candidates for MBBS must be able to identify the three primary colors.

Children study amid vehicles and dogs in this school of MP

Behind the RTO office in Madhya Pradeshʼs Chhatarpur district there is a muddy road where students sit by and study amid speeding vehicles and stray dogs. This is a school set up by a government where children come to learn but the administration failed to provide them a building where students can sit, study and learn easily. However, they study under the open sky on muddy road amid the dangers of speeding vehicles and barking stray dogs. The school was sanctioned in 2013 and is the only school in ward 5 which caters to the need of the children of the area. According to the officials they are doing everything they can to bring the children under the roof but the situation of the school says otherwise. “There are two teachers and 41 school children in this primary school. The school has no building of its own. So wherever we find place, we conduct our school at that place,” School principal Sukhlal Pathak said.Phathak said that he and his predecessor have informed the officials about the state of the school.“We got assurances but nothing has materialised yet. We fear for the lives of students here as vehicles pass at high speed on this road,” he said.

40 year old school has no classes and a tin roof

40 year old school has no classes and a tin roof

“Ab hamare school ka bhi building hoga, achha kamra hoga (Soon, our school will also have a building and nice rooms),” said an elated Alauddin, a Class VIII student of a government-aided school in north Delhi.Alauddin took admission into the school when he was in class 1 and since then he has seen the school always out of room for classes and with tin shades and tin roofs on top of the head. This is the story of Qaumi Senior Secondary School which has 700 students and only 35 teachers and is functioning like this from last 40 years. The school's original building was destroyed in the emergency of 1976 and since then Eidgah has been the refuge for them. The management of the school has been running from pillar to post pleading the government to build them a new building for the school and after three decades of running and pleading they finally got relief when high court cam to their rescue. The plea was filed by the Firoz Bhakt, a teacher and activist and after hearing the plea the HC asked the government to look into the possibility of allotting a land for the school. The school is Urdu medium. In the absence of proper school building and lack of space, classes VI to XII are held in the morning and primary classes are held in the evening. When students have to use the washroom they use the one attached to the mosque.“The school used to run out of a five-story building at Sarai Khalil. During Emergency, the building was demolished. All the others living there were rehabilitated at Inderlok or Ghazipur, but not the school. Every government came by promising to help out but never did anything. We are grateful to the court and hope something happens,” said Abdul Malik Quereshi, manager of the school.

Implementing the safety regulations is also the responsibility of government schools: NISA

Implementing the safety regulations is also the responsibility of government schools: NISA

After the incident of Ryan international school murder case, a number of safety regulations were created for the schools. But, the National Independent Schools Alliance (NISA) alleged that after the incident only private schools are being made soft target Government is asking them comply with all rules strictly and is exempting the government schools from such guidelines while ensuring the safety of the students is duty of both private and government schools.NISA is an all India federation which represents more than 55,000 schools in different states.Addressing a news conference, Kulbhushan Sharma, president of NISA said, ''One incident (in Gurgaon school) has suddenly brought all the private schools under scanner, but worst incidents have happened in government schools but no safety measures are taken and the quality of education too happens to be sub-standard." "Private schools have been asked to install CCTVs, ensure police verification of staff, appoint security guards, hire only that labour whose police verification is done etc. However, the same provision has been missing in most of government schools," he said. Sharma said that in the wake of the Ryan murder case, various state governments passed a list of the security measures and private schools have been asked to comply with them in detailed manner,However, he asked that why strict action was not taken against the government schools when they were found on the wrong foot. "Governments have mandated all their regulations only on private schools and they are always soft on government schools, who are exempted from following the regulations. The trend is further catching up in context of recent tragic death of a child in a Gurgaon school," he said.

Under the pilot project 5000 students of KV to get tablets

Under the pilot project 5000 students of KV to get tablets

In order to keep track on the efficiency and research skills, as a part of pilot project, around 5000 students of the KV of class 8 will be given tablets. These tablets will be used to teach students subjects like science and math and will also help the teachers to track whether students are studying at home or not. One school from each of the 25 regions has been selected by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan for the initiative. According to the reports from HT, a senior official from KV said that these tablets are enabled with the multi device management software which can be used by the teachers to see if students are using the tablet to study or not. Teachers can also see what material was accessed by the students and for what time duration. These tablets will be provided by the HRD ministry free of cost to the students. Students will continue to keep these tablets till class 12 and then can keep the same for themselves."The idea is to ensure they not only access the reading material online, but they can also submit their assignments for online evaluation. It will become easier for teachers to evaluate them as tests will be conducted using the tablets so they don't need to spend time checking their copies," said a senior official.Irrelevant sites blockedA senior official further added "The company that provided the tablets was asked to install the management system so that we can actually find out what exactly are the students using it for".To make sure that students do not misuse the tablet for accessing the social media, all such sites have been blocked.Santosh Kumar Mall, commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan said,"The tablets are being provided free of cost to the students. Delivery has already started. The move will not only reduce the burden of the heavy bag but it will enhance learning too. It will also provide ease of assessment for the teachers."Any final decision to implement the project will be taken soon based on the experience of pilot project.
