India short of 1 million teachers is an upheaval situation

Only one teacher in schools in rural areas of India is not an uncommon knowledge and sight but the situation (shortage of teachers) is grappling not only in rural areas but has spread like an epidemic in an entire nation. In December 2016, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar in response to a question in Lok Sabha informed that elementary level schools have 17.51% vacant posts for government teachers and for secondary level the number is 14.78 %. Taking a look at the state wise vacancies some of states lack more in comparison to the other states. According to the statistics, the list is topped by the Bihar and Jharkhand in number of vacancies for the elementary teachers. The top 6 states and UTs which had the most number of elementary teachers in 2016 were Jharkhand (38.39%), Bihar (34.37%), Delhi (24.96%), Punjab (23.39%), Chandigarh (23.07%) and Uttar Pradesh (22.99%).When it comes to secondary schools, the situation is no better at all. In fact, in case of secondary schools India is short by 1 million teachers than the sanctioned numbers. The top 5 states and UTs with most number of secondary school teacher vacancies in 2016 were Uttar Pradesh (50.0%), Lakshwadeep (41.58%), Bihar (36.09%), Tripura (34.15%), and Chhattisgarh (28.98%).As said by the Prakash Javadekar, TET (Teacher's eligibility test) is held by each state to ensure that only qualified persons get the job as a teacher. Teachers for classes 1 to 8 are selected by the TET. Few days earlier, Delhi government also informed the Delhi High Court that it short of 27,000 teachers in government schools.
