Retired teachers to fill in for the shortfall of teachers in Delhi Government schools

Delhi government is facing the shortfall of about 27000 regular teachers in the government schools and with Delhi High Court putting the hiring of guest teachers on hold, the AAP government has decided to hire retired teachers for three months to temporary fill in the vacant positions.Hiring the regular teachers for the Delhi government schools is a long standing issue and according to the experts such a shortfall is impacting the study of all students.“As a short-term measure, we are hiring retired teachers for two-three months. They will be paid on a per lecture basis. Candidates can be within the age of 60-70 years,” Atishi Marlena, advisor to Education Minister Manish Sisodia, said.Delhi government's Directorate of Education, on Friday, told the HC that there is a shortage of more than 27,000 regular teachers in the government schools of Delhi. Earlier, 64,263 regular posts were advertised of which only 38,926 posts have been filled because of the retirement of equal number of teachers. Since 2009-10 no permanent teachers have been hired. Depending upon the requirement 17,000 guest teachers have been hired for the 9-10 months. During the 49-days rule of AAP in 2014, Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) held the exam for the post of permanent teachers and 2500 teachers were hired by the government. “Though the recruitment was done, an equal number of teachers have retired. We depended on guest teachers to fill in. But with their recruitment process on hold, we are looking at a crisis,” Ajay Veer Yadav, general secretary of the Government School Teachersʼ Association, said.Before AAP came to power in 2015, it had said to regularize the service of 17,000 guest teachers. However, it could not do so but decided to give these guest teachers a certain weightage during the exams.
