Municipal schools of SDMC soon to have classes VI-VIII

Municipal schools of SDMC soon to have classes VI-VIII

In an attempt to control the high drop-out rate in the municipal schools, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to start classes VI, VII and VIII from the next academic session. Currently, schools under SDMC are only up to class V. Bhupendra Gupta, Leader of the Standing Committee of SDMC said that one school from each one has been identified where the move will be implemented by the government from 2018. Meeta Singh, additional commissioner (education), SDMC, said, “The Delhi government's mandate was to educate children from Class VI onwards while corporation schools taught students up to Class V. But now they have classes from nursery onwards in many schools, which is affecting our dropout rate as the parents prefer to send children to schools where there is continuity.”According to the sources at SDMC, as of now the idea is to start the classes VI-VII is on pilot basis because they need to see how much extra infrastructure will be required to support the expansion. “Later, the decision will be implemented in other schools, after we develop infrastructure,” Singh said.Gupta, meanwhile said 'move will help students because by the time they reach Class VIII, they will be in a better position to move to other schools.'The dropout cases among the municipal schools have been the cause of worry as enrollment rate has gone down by 10-20% in all the schools of SDMC in last five years.
