Class 10 dropout made the helicopter in his own backyard

Class 10 dropout made the helicopter in his own backyard

India has always been known for the many things and this time it is in the headlines because a class 10 dropout developed a helicopter in his house's backyard. The news of such inventions primarily comes from institutes like IITs who do research on some extraordinary objects but this time, it is a man from Idukki, a small district in Kerala who is in the news for developing a helicopter in his own backyard.54-year old D Sadasivan, from Kerala Idukki hits the headlines for developing a twin-seater ultra-light aircraft by using the engine from Maruti car and other recycled materials. What makes this feat so great is the fact that this man has studied only up to class 10.How did he make it? It took sadasivan almost four years to create the helicopter. When he initially discussed the idea in the school where his daughter studies, the principal asked Sadasivan to build a model of the helicopter for showcasing in the school."I began to build the chopper after the school principal requested me to do so. In fact, he wanted me to build only a model of a helicopter to keep it the school. I thought why not make a fully-operational one," said Sadasivan. For build purpose he used the engine of Maruti 800 and a reduction gear box.He owns an engineering workshop from where he got the rest of the parts for the helicopter. Can the homemade helicopter fly? Upon asking the question he said that he needs month time before he can fly the machine. "I need to get clearance from various agencies for permission to fly. However, before that I can fly the chopper within the limits of the property I own" he said.

Indian Educational Institutes faces a lack of qualified teachers

Indian Educational Institutes faces a lack of qualified teachers

According to the senior faculty member at the art of living, one of the major shortcomings of the Indian Educational Institutes is the lack of qualified teachers. "The Indian education system is not so bad, it is the people who are teaching are failures. Unless there is the real passion for teaching and some sort of financial background, good teachers don't get into education," said Khurshed Batliwala "Ready Study Go" is the book written by Batliwala and Dinesh Ghodke. This easy to read book provide students with a road map on how they can excel in academics and how they can love the subjects which they are learning. "Most of the people who score 100 per cent in schools and colleges basically know nothing. There is a reason behind any and every logic, but the teachers, themselves being less knowledgeable are unable to generate the passion for learning, rather pushes for securing good grades" said Batliwala who has been associated with the Art of Living for 25 years. He further stressed the point that teachers need to be more creative and pro-active when it comes to imparting the knowledge to the students given in the text. "A teacher should bring up some creativity while teaching the school text books. Simply reading out the texts will never develop the logic's behind any syllabus. Innovation and practical approach will always help students to understand subjects in better way," said the 47-year old author. Instead of educating the child, parents must educate themselves first and start by asking the questions; why do we go to school, why do we learn various subjects, why do we clear the exams, why in the first place we are competing with someone else for good grades? What is this education all about and how exactly does it add quality in mine and my child life. Commenting on the hoard of getting good grades Batliwala suggested that merely securing good marks in the examination is not the proof that one is knowledgeable enough. "Grades cannot be a parameter to judge a student's capabilities. A certificate or a mark-sheet should not become the identity of a student. Though it is not easy to change this perception so quickly, yet the process has begun. Company like Google don't ask for mark-sheet rather they go for skill test," he quipped. When asked about his success mantra in short he said "Don't be scared of failures. Many people don't even try something new because they are scared of it. Learn to take risks and follow your heart."

Nitish: Post-Matric scholarship will continue for the SC ST and OBC

Nitish: Post-Matric scholarship will continue for the SC, ST and OBC

Post-Matric scholarships for the students from weaker section of the society such as SC, ST, OBC, BC (Backward class) and EBC (extremely backward classes) will continue to enable them to pursue higher studies. Nitish Kumar also made it clear that department is working diligently to make sure that these scholarships are given to genuine students who are enrolled in genuine institutions. It has happened in the past that the students enrolled in bogus institution have availed of scholarship which was meant for SC categories. "Misgivings are being spread vis-a-vis post-matriculation scholarship. It will continue till 2016-17. Those (students) who have been availing scholarships will continue to avail it (scholarship) till completion of their education," Kumar said. The CM also said " government will carry out study and review about the 'student credit card scheme' after the completion of 2017-18 in order to find out whether or not the scheme has benefitted students belonging to SC, ST, EBC and BC. It will be completely "optional" for students to avail of either 'Student Credit Card' facility or 'post matriculation scholarship. Students cannot avail the benefits of both the schemes.""We thought that we will not have to give scholarship to anyone as we have launched a universal credit card scheme for students. In education loan, the union ministry of HRD gives guarantee to banks on the loan while the state government gives guarantee to banks for not only the 'credit' but also gives guarantee on 'interest." the CM said

Delhi schools blackmailing parents for fee hikes

Delhi schools blackmailing parents for fee hikes

A school is a place where parents send their children for right guidance so that one day their ward can become a responsible citizen of the society. In India, schools particularly have been given quite an importance since the ancient times as they were known as 'temple of learning.' But, this is so not the case with the schools located in the National capital of the country. According to some reports thousands of parents were protesting outside the gates of the private schools as they were seeking a logical explanation for the sudden fee hike in the school fee. Many schools in Delhi and Noida have raised their fee without giving any prior notice to the parents. Also, no comment or conversation on the turmoil from the school authorities makes the situation even more suspicious. These educational institutes have become worst nightmare of many parents as they are looking to fulfill their unethical demands by putting the ward's future in danger. These schools are going against the CBSE norms as the affiliated schools are increasing the fee up to 50 percent a year whereas according to the guidelines the fee can only be increased after three years and up to 10 percent only. Talking to the reporters agonized parents said that school authorities owe an explanation to the parents about where their hard earned money is being utilized. Parents blamed schools as the facilities in the schools are not up to the mark and instead of acting as educational temple they are simply acting as money making machines. These schools are also accused of conducting the classes in congested basements which are actually storehouses.Instead of resolving the situation the schools are more focused on causing the turmoil as they are asking for the annual development charges from the parents who are seeking TC of their ward. Parents feel that situation is dicey and fishy as there is lack of communication from the side of the school authorities. There is no need to maintain the communication gap if the schools are working for the betterment of the students and if their demands are genuine, many parents think.

Indian student applicants applying to US universities dropped in numbers

Indian student applicants applying to US universities dropped in numbers

US universities are registering a significant drop in the number of applicants from India due to the following reasons: Spate of hate crimesFear of changes in the visa policyTrump administration According to the results of the survey, American Higher Education Groups registered a drop of 26% in undergraduate applications and 15 percent in the graduate applications. However, the full version of the report is due and will be released later this week. The report mentioned that India and China collectively constitutes the 47 percent of the US international student enrollment. China reported a drop of 25 percent in the undergraduate studies and 32 percent from the graduate studies. The two major concerns for the students and their families are: Rise in the student visa denials at the US and China embassiesThe perception that the atmosphere in US is now less welcoming The concerns of the family and students are also related the restrictions around visas which can impact the ability to travel, re-entry after travel and employment opportunities. "I'd say the rhetoric and actual executive orders are definitely having a chilling effect on decisions by current applicants/admitted students, and by extension are likely to affect future applicants as well," Wim Wiewel, Portland State's president, who was recently in India told Inside Higher Education. Demonetization in India and weak value of the Indian Rupee against the Indian Dollar are also the factors contributing to the drop in Indian students in the US according to the Wiewel. "However, we were struck by how much US higher education is still considered the holy-grail, and that especially in the southern half of India almost every middle class family seems to have a relative in the US... Thus, if nothing too bad happens in the future we will recover from this, but people are watching," he noted.

Congress leader Motilal Vohra, in Rajya Sabha, raised the issue of making aadhaar card compulsory by saying that under the mid-day meal scheme government has made it necessary. "I want to tell this House that no one will be deprived of mid-day meals. Everybody will get mid-day meal and they will get Aadhaar card as well," the Minister said. He said that large number of beneficiaries if not majority of them have the aadhaar cards and facilities will made to enroll the remaining students under the UID scheme as well and in cases where it is not possible to create Aadhaar card facilities, UIDs will be provided to the students by the state government. Earlier in a bid to ensure the transparency and increased efficiency in mid-day meal scheme, HRD ministry had made the Aadhaar card mandatory for the school children. CBSE: Students to lose grade on missing the Independence Day celebration

CBSE: Students to lose grade on missing the Independence Day celebration

CBSE made a new announcement under which it mandated the class 6 to 9 students to attend the Independence and Republic Day celebration in order to get the grades.A teacher in conversation with HT said "this announcement is part of the new uniform assessment pattern which requires schools to assess students on their sincerity, attitude towards society, nation and other factors, which are hard to quantify. According to the new system, discipline has been separated from scholastic activities and will be graded separately." The grading system The grades will be given to students on three point basis with 'A' equal to 'outstanding', 'B' equal to 'very good' and 'C qualifying as fair.' However, this new move of CBSE has left many teachers and principals of many schools puzzled. "How can you judge anybody on sincerity?" asked Deepshikha Srivastava, the principal of Rajhans Vidyalaya in Andheri. "The best we can do is to ask the teachers to make a note in the calendar if the child behaves in an extremely anti-social manner," she added. Under this new announcement each school is supposed to come with its own mechanism to judge but this will become a hindrance in the process of standardization, said a principal. "Every school will do it differently. Some might mark students for attending national days, while others on their interactions with other kids," said Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School in Santacruz. "Under the CCE scheme, children used to love coming to school as we conduct several activities to make learning fun," said Raj Aloni, principal, Ram Sheth Thakur Public School in Kharghar. He added, "The formative assessments were fun and the focus was on all-round development."

Changes in the engineering syllabi suggested by AICTE to meet the needs of the industries

Changes in the engineering syllabi suggested by AICTE to meet the needs of the industries

In an attempt to meet and fulfill the needs of industries, a committee of subject experts has been set up by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), which will help in revising and formulating the new syllabus for engineering in India. The committee is in charge of revising the existing syllabi and suggesting the needful changes. Seeing the falling employment of the engineering graduates, AICTE decided to take the step. Meeting industry needs Working in the same direction, AICTE has issued regulations under which a single entrance exam for getting admissions in the engineering colleges was approved. The single entrance exam is named as NEEM (National Entrance Exam). HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar also asked engineering colleges to revise their engineering curriculum keeping the needs and standards of industry in mind. A dedicated committee to revise the syllabus The committee consists of sub-groups of experts of different subjects and each subgroup is headed by a professor from IIT.Prior to all this, AICTE had a model curriculum which used to serve as a base for the universities for preparing their own syllabus. For the first time in nine years, a committee of experts is all set to revise the existing syllabus and any suggestions in this regard will be submitted after summer vacation, just in time for the new academic session. Pradipta Banerji, former IIT-Roorkee director, welcomed the AICTE's decision to revise the syllabus and said "The crucial part is - it will be done in consultation with the industry. Most engineers remain unemployed because their skills are not in sync with industry requirements." "The fields of engineering and technology undergo changes every day, and we need to keep up with their requirements. Students need to have skills required by the industry. Some of the institutes are still teaching decades- old syllabi and using obsolete teaching tools," said a senior official from the human resource development (HRD) ministry. "There has to be a constant dialogue between educational institutes and the industry. Each institution, while applying for approval, will have to mandatorily certify the completion of this process. If they fail to do so, action will be taken against them," he added.

CBSE to introduce framework to accredit schools

CBSE to introduce framework to accredit schools

The CBSE is likely to come up with a framework for all its affiliated schools to accredit them. The step is being taken to make sure that schools are still focusing on the quality of education rather than focusing on fancy buildings. The board has already approached the quality council of India, an autonomous body whose job is to establish and operate national accreditation structure, in this regard. "CBSE has asked QCI to draft an approach paper to grade schools with more weightage to criterion like academic performance and learning outcomes, and reduce weightage to fancy infrastructure," an official said. This is not for the first time that CBSE is trying to come up with such framework for the schools. In 2012, the board launched the School Quality Assessment and Accreditation, under which 12 agencies were given the duty to access and rate the schools but, later the project was junked. "Unlike popular magazines, this will not involve ranking institutions, but rather, will establish a level of acceptable quality for all accredited schools while respecting the unique missions of the institutions involved. The standards applied for accreditation will be qualitative and can be adapted and applied to any of the types of educational institutions affiliated. The awarding of accreditation will signify that the school has met standards at an acceptable level and is willing to both maintain those standards and to improve in areas pointed out to them," the official said.

DU will fill 9,000 empty ad-hoc posts this year: Prakash Javadekar

HRD minister Prakash Javadekar recently announced about DU getting ready to fill 9,000 ad-hoc teaching posts this year in the University. When asked that there is no such provision about the part time employment, he said that government is trying to make all the ad-hoc posts permanent. Javadekar said "temporary and ad-hoc teachers receive the same salary as Assistant Professors and there is no discrimination between them." Reasons behind such decisions "Now, the solution is that within one year, all these posts will be made permanent and not temporary,"Javadekar said during the Question Hour. He further added "the government wants to fill up all the vacancies and has been monitoring the teacher recruitment process for the same reason." "As far as the Delhi University is concerned, now we have solved the problem which was pending for 10 years and we are tracking it every month," he said He also told that government is mandating that every 15 days the vacancies in all 41 DU universities be notified. The information regarding all this will soon be made available on the University Grants Commission's (UGC) official website.
