State wide education program launched by Kerala Government for the transgender community



In an attempt to uplift the transgender community and to provide them equal opportunities, Kerala government has decided to come up with an education program for the community. In India, Kerala is the first state with transgender policy which aim at ending the social stigma towards this sexual minority group and help them with non-discrimination and justice. Moving forward in the direction of education, a 10 day long state wide survey was also launched by the Kerala government. The main purpose of the survey is take the head count of the community members across Kerala. P S Sreekala, director of state Literacy Mission which conducts the education program and survey, said "it is a first-of-its-kind venture being carried out for the minority group in the country.The Literacy Mission already has its equivalency course and other programs. We are planning to bring the TGs under this program," Transgender survey "As an initial step, we have launched a state-wide TG survey. With its completion, we will get a clear picture about the total number of people belonging to the minority group in each district," she said. The special classes for the TG community will organized with the help of civic authorities. Other minority sections State Education Minister C Raveendranath said "the core objective of the literacy program is to create a society without marginal sections.""The existing syllabus in the program will be followed in the case of TGs also," Sreekala said. However, the government doesn’t intend to stop with the TG community as government also has the plans to bring other marginal sections of the society such as migrant workers and coastal people under this education program. In recent times Kerala has come up with TG friendly initiatives for uplifting them and to bring them into the main society. These initiatives ensure TG community, equal access to social and economic opportunities, resources and services, right to equal treatment under the law, right to live life without violence and equal rights in decision making bodies.
