India to launch its first sign language dictionary in both print and video format

India is all geared up to release its first sign language dictionary, which is being developed by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC). The dictionary is first of its kind and aims at bringing the uniformity in sign languages used by hearing and speech impaired people. Features of the sign language dictionary So far the dictionary consists of 6,032 Hindi and English words along with the corresponding graphic representation of the signs which are used in daily life.The dictionary is under development and will be released in both print and video format.This dictionary will bring uniformity in language among 50 lakh hearing impaired people and 20 lakh speech impaired people in the country as they will get a uniform language to communicate with each other.The dictionary will include about 6,000 words n English and Hindi from every possible aspect of life such as legal, medical, technical and academic.Every word in the dictionary will be accompanied by its illustration and video counterpart. i On the occasion of inaugurating a two-day national conference titled 'Empowering Deaf through Indian Sign language', Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot said " A comprehensive Indian Sign Language Dictionary is the need of the hour to facilitate communication between the hearing and speech impaired and create a basic database for further policy making."
