HC told to set up a committee in order to probe police misbehavior in Ramjas College

City police on Tuesday informed Delhi High Court about the 3 member committee which it has set up in order to probe the misbehavior of the police which includes beating of women students by the police. "Delhi Commissioner of Police has already constituted a three member committee of Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vigilance and DCP, Women-child", told police to division bench of Justice G. Rohini and justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal. Seeing that the National Human Rights Commission is taking the matter, the court granted police four week time in which they have to submit the report on the steps thay are taking. At the same time HC granted liberty to the petitioners that they can approach again if the committee fails to submit its report to the NHRC in the stipulated time provided. The court heard the plea of two Delhi University final year students namely, Tarun Narang and Deepak Joshi who were seeking directions for setting up an independent committee to probe the matter of beating of the female students by the police during the Ramjas College violence. They also urged the HC to issue fresh set of guidelines to the law enforcement agencies when they deal with students and media on college campuses. The plea said "the tension between the opposing groups of students increased despite police presence, after which the situation turned violent and police used excessive force to bring the situation under control."
