6th day of the hunger strike by Haryana student girls: Government to accept demands

Standing against the gruesome attacks on women, 86 village girls from the state village went on an indefinite protest against the same. All the girls in the protest are students of class 9 and 10 in a village school. The girls feared that they might have to face harassment and molestation if they were to travel to other village for studying. "We fear harassment and molestation by youths of other villages and hence, we are demanding up-gradation of our school up to class 12," said one of the protestors. These girls were sitting on indefinite protest from last 6 days and finally the state government has agreed to their request and will upgrade their school till class 12 so that they don’t have to travel to other school in another village. Haryana education minister Ram Bilas Sharma, on the 6th day of the protest announced "the Government High School at village Gothda Tappa will now be upgraded from class 10 to class 12". "In view of the hunger strike of girls in the village and the government's commitment to provide education to every girl in the state, the Haryana Government has accepted their demand," the minister said.According to the village head Suresh Chauhan out of 86 girls 13 were on hunger strike.Haryana is state with the lowest child sec ration and in recent times has also witnessed some horrific crimes against the women.Biggest hurdle in upgrading the school from class 10 to 12 was, the school had only 86 children in both classes whereas the required condition is to have at-least 150 students in class 9 and 10.Even after the promise from the government the girls are continuing their protest. "The students will continue with the stir till they receive a copy from the government mentioning that the school has been upgraded," said Chauhan.
