Over 40% students failed in Punjab Class X board exam results

Over 40% students failed in Punjab Class X board exam results

It is the first time the board discarded e the marks moderation scheme under which students were allotted grace marks which helped them in improving their final scores. Marks moderation scheme also led to higher pass percentage. Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has declared the final results for the class X in which the pass percentage of the students have fallen from 72.25 percent in last year to 57.50 percent this year. This dip in the pass percentage of the students is so far the sharpest dip of the decade. Declaring the results on Monday , PSEB chairman Balbir Singh Dhol said "We are satisfied with the results. A total of 3,30,437 students appeared for the exam, out of which 1,90,001 students passed. While 45,734 students failed, 94,271 students have to re-appear. The results of 431 students were withheld due to technical reasons".This is the first time ever for the board to abolish the marks moderation policy. The decision to abolish the marks moderation was taken by the board in the meeting last month including the CBSE board. All boards agreed not to spike the marks of the students artificially."The dip in pass percentage is short term, due to abolition of the marks moderation system. It is good for the students because they are now being evaluated on the basis of what they actually write in the exams… When the students know that they will not get any grace marks, they will prepare well and do better. The results will improve" said Dhol. The class XII result by the PSEB also witnessed the sharp decline this year which even called for the transfer order of the school principals of the government schools. Numerical status on pass percentage in different schools Government schools- 52.80%Affiliated schools- 70.08%Aided schools- 48.8%Pass percentage of girls- 63.97%Pass percentage of the boys- 52.35% “This year, the board has decided to hold ‘re-appear’ and compartment exams in June. The exams for senior secondary class shall be held on June 22, and for Class X on June 23,” said Dhol.
