Funds available but no free books and uniforms for UP students
Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India presented its report in Vidhan Sabha on Thursday in which it was revealed that around 6.22 lakh students in UP were not provided with the free books during 2012 to 2016. Not only this but, it was also found during the editing the implementation of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education that 9 lakh students were not given the uniforms during 2011-2016 even when the funds were available with the government. On the contrary, regions like Firozabad, Ghaziabad, Sonbhadra and Maharajganj had extra books with them worth 4.23 crore. More on the report CAG also revealed that there were shortage of 1.5 lakh teachers but the reports suggest that it was more of a failure on the part of government to engage the existing faculty rationally. This situation occurred as schools with more students did not have teachers and schools with less than 50 students had more teachers. Upon physical verification of the schools it was found that there was overall shortage of 272 classrooms in 111 schools and on the other hand in another 166 schools there were excess of 442 classrooms. Further in the reports it was found that out of 1.6 lakh schools, more than 50,000 schools have no playgrounds, 57,107 are without any boundary walls, 35,995 are without any libraries, 2,978 are without any drinking facilities and about 1,734 have no separate toilets for boys and girls.
