Fee hike in Punjab University restricted to 10%, students call of the protests



The Punjab University has finally decided to restrict their fee hike to 10 percent for the academic session 2017-18 for all the courses.The decision came into effect during the meeting held at Punjab University after senators demanded to review the fee hike and after the decision was announced many student organizations called of their one month long protest. “After a detailed discussion on the fee issue, the senate unanimously resolved to increase the tuition fee for the new entrants by 10%, subject to a minimum of Rs500,” said a release issued by PU. Authorities in Punjab University hiked the fee in March by 40 to 1100 %.Earlier fee hike for some courses in Punjab University B. Pharma- from Rs5,080 to Rs50,000MA journalism-  from Rs5290 to Rs30,000Dental Course- from Rs 86,400 to 1.50 lakh During the meeting it was suggested by PU senator Pawan Kumar Basal that fee hike should be 10% over the fee of the last financial year and termed the previous fee hike as unjustified and unethical.“We have called off our protest against the fee hike. Ten per cent hike in fee in courses is acceptable to us,” said Nishant Kaushal, President, Panjab University Students’ Council said on Monday.The student organizations in the Punjab University were protesting against the significant fee hike in the tuition fee. During the protest the student organizations also clashed with the police when a peaceful protest turned violent.
