Cell phones to be banned in Bengal Schools
West Bengal Education Minister, Partha Chatterjee, directed all the schools in the Bengal state to make sure that students do not carry the mobile phones in the school premises or classes. The directive was issued due to increase in the reported number of suicide cases. It was observed that students in the schools were falling victim to the game named 'Blue Whale Challenge'. This is an online game which gives its player 50 tasks to complete the last task being committing suicide. To prevent such suicide cases, Chaterjee asked the school authorities to keep strict watch on the children in the schools and urged all parents to keep close eye on the activities of the children at the home. In an event, Public Library Day, organized by the Department of Mass Education and Library Sciences, he said, ''There are allegations of a number of students getting victimized by the Blue Whale game across the state. It is a matter of concern for us. Schools and the authorities should be on alert". "The Blue Whale game should be stopped immediately. We have asked the schools to ban mobile phones for students inside schools premises," he added.Chatterjee further said that 25 government schools in Kolkata have been identified and in these schools UNICEF will conduct workshops on how to use the internet safely. Similar workshop will also be conducted in some private schools as well.
