Bihar govt. backing up the BITS' off-campus center
Nitish Kumar govt. has stepped in favoring the off-campus center of the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) in Patna which is the cause of stand-off between Union government and some deemed universities.Last week, Arun Kumar Singh, Bihar principal secretary of science and technology also appealed to the HRD ministry for the UGC to approve the BITS Mesra's center in Patna. On November 9, 2015, UGC directed 10 deemed universities including the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in Pilani and the BIT in Mesra to shut down their off-campus centers as they were unauthorized and were set up without the permission. An off-campus center, according to the higher-education regulator, means a center of deemed university which is located outside the main campus of the university. A notice by the UGC created an uncertainty over the BTech degrees issued by the Patna center when the Council of Architecture (CoA), which provides registration to all architects in India, refused to register the first batch of the graduate architects from the center. The refusal to register the architects by the CoA triggered the request from the Bihar government. In the letter, Arun Kumar stated that the BIT's Mersa branch was set up on the request from the Bihar government as the state lost two of its best engineering colleges — Birsa Institute of Technology in Sindri and BIT Mesra — after the bifurcation of the state in 2000.
