CBSE to look into the matter of unreasonable fees and hidden costs; Demands date from private schools

In an attempt to tighten the grip on the schools which are charging unreasonable fees and imposing hidden charges, the CBSE has demanded the data from the private schools regarding their fee structure and any increase in fee in recent years. CBSE took the step weeks after warning the private schools to close uniform, stationary or any other shop they are running in schools. "We have told schools that they should not charge unreasonable fees. The charges should be reasonable and there should be no hidden costs as that is the more irritating part for parents," Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said. "We have sought data from schools about their fee structure and increase in fees. Many schools have sent it and the data is being analyzed. Schools which haven't sent it have been sent reminders and penalized," he further added. The minister, however, did not clarify about the penalty which the schools will be facing if they were found guilty of charging extra fees and levying hidden charges. In fact, overcharging by the schools has been a concern for parents, which they have raised from time to time. In order stop schools monopolizing parent's money, Gujarat state last month introduced 'Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2017' to regulate the preposterous fees charged by the schools.
